OOC: Quick reminder - Chieftess Palepelt is female. The old First Chief, Keensight, is male. Also, I'll add some Children of the Oaks here once I've figured out which are without players at the moment...
IC: Tears leaked out of the corners of Longsong's eyes as One-Edge answered his sending, giving him strength. ~**Lam.**~
Palepelt held out her arms, gesturing for those who'd followed her to stand back. "What is your wish, High One?"
"Merely to have be given somehhing I've lost," the tall stranger said, tightening his grip on Longsong's throat further. "Then I will leave you to your lovely celebration, which I hope shall contain less filth." He looked in turn at the wolf-bloods present as he said this.

Seeing as well as feeling Longsong's tears infuriated the elfess. One-Edge's moment of clamness started to crumble, but she held on. He needed her. ~**You're doing grat Adem. Just a moment more. Our tribemates will return in haste.**~ She wasn't able to keep her mind at ease, between calming Longsong and receiving constant feed of rage from Softpaws. The wolf was barely paying her any attention, only a nudge away from attacking. Her own anger also swelling. One-Edge knew she wouldn't be able to keep it up much longer.

~**I am just as surprised as you, my friend**~, Hale responded, ~**But surely, our eyes and ears can't be deceiving us**~ She took a step forward, laying a hand against Evening-Fall's back, drawing strength from him. ~**I hope Palepelt will stop this madness**~ But knowing that The new First Chief held no love for the wolf-blooded elves, made Hale worry even more about how this would end for them. *They have been through so much already...*
Tracker had followed Palepelt, worry etched on his face. He hadn't known what was going on, but a feeling in his gut told him there was trouble. The presence of a High One surprised him, but there was more going on that needed his attention. A quick scan around learned Tracker that one of his tribe seemed to have taken the cubs that had recently been born by one of the she-wolves in the storage tent. He shook his head, looking at the bag filled with squirming cubs, calling for their mother. Enough harm had already been done to the wolf-blooded elves by sending them away, wounded and all. Tracker decided he would help prevent more harm coming to them and their wolves, no matter what. He didn't feel comfortable around the animals, but the cubs should not be hurt. He walked over to the elf holding the bag. "Give that to me", Tracker said with as much authority in his voice as he could. ~**My chief...**~, Tracker sent to Whitewater while looking sternly at the elf carrying the cubs, the old chief needed to know what was going on.

More of the survivors arrived on the scene as the deadlock continued. Greyspear had to grab hold of Bloodmane to not have her charge the tall stranger, while Dawngazer signaled to any else who'd arrived to stand back and wait for one of their own to arrive with the crystal. On the Children of the Oaks side Silvermist, Skyflare and Dusk stood staring in disbelief at the scene before them. One of them shouted: "Chieftess, what is the meaning of this?!" but then fell quiet. No answer came from Palepelt. OOC: Sasa, did you mean Softpaws instead of Stronglegs? Also, tag gerlin with Eveninglight!

~**We've found it, Greyspear!**~, Eveninglight sent as soon as she was within sendingrange. Shade ran as fast as he could and soon the gathering of elves came into view. ::We must go to the High One::, Eveninglight explained to her bond. Reluctantly, Shade did was she asked. There was a sense of wrongness that unsettled him.
Rainblossom had followed Palepelt and the other Children of the Oaks. Usually she was pretty good at finding the silver lining of situations, but today she found it hard to do. Seeing what was happening here, made it even harder for her to do so. She tried grasping what was going on. There was a High One, who was holding one of the newcomers by the throat. A High One! And Palepelt seemed to know him. And then there was a member of the Children of the oaks clutching a bag containing what Rainblossom suspected were the young wolf-cubs. Ironpaw, standing at her side growled low in his throat. ::wrong::, he sent. Seeing she couldn't help the elf, Rainblossom wanted to rush to the elf holding the cubs. He couldn't be up to much good. Yet before she coucld move, Tracker approached the elf and seemed to demand to cubs from him. For a moment, Rainblossom was worried, but she knew Tracker to be on their side.

Since Eveningsky had reached the clearing with Stronglegs on her tail, she had remained frozen only feets away from where Greyspear stood. She tried to understand what was going on, and then to understand how it was possible that these CotO elves could be so cruel. Not to mention the High One. *Hang in there Longsong.* She thought, only a moment before Eveninglight dashed in on Shade.
One-Edge's trembling increased as her rage pushed forward. She would have just lost it and lashed out when she caught Eveninglight's scent in the air and saw her arrival. The relief pushed the anger aside. It was still there, strong, but she could concentrate on Longsong. ~**See, here she is.**~ As she took her first sensible peek around the gathered elves, she realized that almost their whole tribe was there. ~**We're all here. Nothing will happen to you. I won't let anything happen to you.**~ It was a promise.
Evening-Fall was glad to have someone like-minded at his side this moment. Although at the right start Hale hadn't been on the survivor's side, she seemed to be very much so now. He had just updated Morning-Glow with images of what he could see, and few words on what was happening. Morning-Glow had just sent a notion of receipt but no other comment. Not unusual, except the situation was nothing like ever before. What would happen to their tribe? If the survivors had left, there might have been a chance to recover from the division felt at the chief's challenge. Now Evening-Fall felt a distress that foresaw dark times for his tribe.

Eveninglight felt her heart race in fear as she approached the High One. Her mouth was dry, her hands wet. "H-high One...", she stuttered, holding the crystal close to her chest, clenched in a tight fist. "I have what you asked for." She dared to glance up at the tall elf for a moment and looked away again quickly. She felt so small, compared to such a being. Shade didn't seem very impressed by the High One though. While Eveninglight trembled in fear on his back, he looked at the tall elf with fire in his eyes, baring his teeth. The elf would have to go through him to hurt his bond.

The elf holding the bag of wolf cubs sneered at Tracker's request. "Do you really think I'd take your orders over the orders of a High One?" she said. "You better back off, old one!"
As one the nearest Children of the Oaks that had arrived with the High One turned their weapons on Tracker, advancing on him in a manner that clearly said 'back away'.
Longsong felt consciousness leave him. His awareness wasn't quite gone yet, but his vision was blurry and darkening by the heartbeat. He heard One-Edge's sending, but all he could send in return was a desperate sharing of both love and fear.
The High One kept his grip on Longsong while he smiled at Eveninglight. "Well, well, that was quick. You're good for something at least. Give it here!" One of his hands stretched outside the glowing barrier surrounding him and Longsong, palm open. "As soon as I have it, your friend can go." He gave Longsong a shake, earning a whimper.
Greyspear had wanted to order Eveninglight to give him the crystal, but the High One's order came before he could speak. Worried about Eveninglight, but even more worried about Longsong, Greyspear lock-sent to Eveninglight: ~**Careful cub. Steady hand. We'll all rush in to defend you if he moves to attack.**~
Bloodmane and Dawngazer stood stock still, ready for anything and everything that might happen.
Palepelt had taken up position by the Children of the Oaks not by the High One's side, keeping elves such as Dusk, Silvermist and Skyflare back from any line of fire from the weapons present.
OOC: The other chiefs of the Childern of the Oaks will arrive in my next post.

"Yes, I do think so", Tracker replied calmly, "No harm will be done to these animals." He looked each of elves threatening him straight in the eye. "Nor to these elves. You'll have to answer to me if innocent blood is spilled." Although the odds were against him, Tracker was prepared to take all of these elves on. He didn't agree with sending away the wolf-blooded elves and attacking them like this was even worse. It was shameful. How had his tribe come to this?
Greyspear's sending gave Eveninglight the courage to stretch out her trembling hand and place the crystal in the High One's hand. "Please", she begged, "Please let Longsong go. We've lost so many already, we can't loose him too. Please, High One..."
~**Greyspear**~, Rainblossom sent to the elf that was to her the chief of the newcomers. With a few images she showed him Tracker's actions and current situation. Knowing Palepelt didn't like wolf-blooded elves, she didn't approach her.

Cloudbird dashed in at a full run, skidding to a stop by her tribe. Her heart stuck in her throat as she assessed the situation.

The High One looked at the crystal Eveninglight had put in his hand, then gave her the thinnest of smiles. "Thank you," he said to her and the glow around him and Longsong faded. "Kill the curs." In a heartbeat the High One had flung Longsong right into the midst of the armed, hostile Children of the Oaks, before vanishing into thin air. Longsong had precious little wind left in him so the impact with the ground knocked him out cold. Greyspear had no time to more than acknowledge Rainblossom's sending when the High One gave the order. Seeing red, the old wolfrider gave a challenge howl before rushing into the forming fray. ~**All young ones, hurry back to the injured and help them flee! The rest, with me! Save Longsong! Save Softpaws and her cubs!**~ Dawngazer and Bloodmane were right behind Greyspear, weapons drawn and ready, Dawngazer riding Stronglegs into battle. But despite their rage their attacks were aimed to wound, not kill. Elf did not kill elf... unless forced to. Branchwalker stood frozen, unable to either attack or run, leaving himself open to harm. The elves with the bag of wolf cubs formed as circle around the bag, giving it a kick that resulted in whimpers. A few of them - old warriors with many tricks up their sleeves - pounced on Tracker, weapons drawn. In the distance more Children of the Oaks were emerging from tents, all carrying weapons. Some were laughing, others were blank-faced, but all were moving toward the wolf-blooded elves. **They're not themselves!** came the panicked open-sending from First Chief Palepelt. **Don't fight them, run! Take all children and young, and run!** She herself took a defensive stance, as if to hold off any who'd dare to chase the fleeing. Keensight and his followers arrived just in time to see the chaos unfold and hear Palepelt's open-sending. Faces grim, he and several of his followers took up position to incapacitate all elves who'd dare follow the fleeing. Others did as told and fled. OOC: Now it's a free-for-all! Everyone is free to have an unnamed Children of the Oaks attack them. There's plenty of those to go around and they'll attack anyone with animal-blood or purebloods who oppose them in any way. They won't speak, though some may laugh. The only thing that's "off limits" is saving the wolf-cubs; I've reserved that for Eveningsky so she has a reason to change her name. But all other heroics are up for grabs! Go save and be saved, my friends

A howl of rage and challenge ripped from Cloudbird's throat and she could feel Rockclimber's adding to it. Even under the blinding anger, she could feel that Palepelt was right - they needed to provide cover for escape. She began looking around desperately for her sister, snarling as a pureblood, smiling like Claw had, aimed at her with a bow. She spun out of the way, sending, ~**'Sky? Eveningsky, where are you?!**~ She barely had a moment as she dashed away from the maddened Children of the Oaks and into the tent with Softpaws, knife drawn to protect the young mother.
Featherfoot's eyes widened in horror as she watched some of her tribemates. It seemed they'd completely lost their minds. Without hesitation, she pulled Wishpond closer and stood near Keensight, and attempted to will that shimmering shield back into existence.

Shade jumped forward, biting into the empty place where the High One had just been. ::No Shade!::, Eveninglight's urgent sending made the big wolf turn around. ::We must help Longsong:: With a few leaps the wolf landed a midst the hostile Children of the Oaks snapping left and right, while Eveninglight swung her sword. Their aim was not to kill, but just to get to Longsong, get him to safety. She heard Greyspear's sending, but she was sure they were close enough to be able to help.
Rainblossom was glad she had brought her bow and had her quiver filled with new arrows. Quickly, she strung her bow, Ironpaw guarding her back. Nocking an arrow she searched for target. It felt wrong to kill an elf, wounding the attackers so they could attack no more should be the way to go, she decided. While others fled, she could help defend them. ~** Firecry!**~, Rainblossom sent, hoping her brother was within sending range. She desperately needed to tell him what was happening here.
Carrying the things Waterfall had asked for, ThunderGrace arrived at the scene just as Palepelt sent in panick. "Cinder!" She looked around, to see where the healer and her daughter were. ~**Waterfall! Where are you? Is Cinder safe?**~
Wasp skidded to a halt, almost crashing into an elf who was attacking Tracker. Just before Palepelt's sending Wasp had thought about joining the fighting against the beast-blooded elves, but as Tracker's attacker turned towards her and grinned, sword pointing at her, she recognized the truth of the Chief's words. These elves were not themselves at all. There was no fight to join, these elves were just crazy and would perhaps not even know friend from foe. "Oakleaf", Wasp heard Tracker say to another attacker, "We are friends, remember?" As she jumped, tumbled and turned to dodge attacks from two elves and answer with attacks of her own, Wasp noticed Tracker only dodging the attacks, as he tried to reason with his attackers. He had already a deep cut on his forehead, blood dripping in his eye. ~**Stop being such a fool, old man**~' Wasp sent to him. ~**Kill him, or he'll kill you. It's that simple**~ A quick slash to the throat and Wasp ended the life of one of her adversaries, she crippled the other by cutting open his leg. The elf didn't cry out, he only laughed. Tracker had started his fight in earnest now, trying to wound, not to kill. He could hold himself well in a fistfight, but in a melee-fight with weapons Tracker didn't have that much skill. While he outsmarted his opponent a few times, the experienced warrior attacking him had the advance. A small knife whizzed passed Tracker and landed in another elf's eye. Wasp did not appreciate elves that tried to attack another in the back. ~** Finish him**~, Wasp urged.
"Oh no!", Hale cried, pale as snow, frightened. She grabbed Evening-Fall's hand. "Let's run", she said, "We should help everyone flee"
Sabre took up position next to Palepelt, weapons drawn. His mind reached for his beloved DancingFlame. Eventhough they were currently at odds, his first thought was of her, always, and their children. ~** Be safe, my love**~, he sent, ~**Make sure our children are safe**~ With a few words and images he explained the situation to his lifemate. Yes, with danger threatening their and their family's lives, their hearts had found each-other once more. ~**I will, beloved lifemate**~, DancingFlame answered, ~**You be safe too.**~

Silvereyes gulped as she nearly ran over Branchwalker as he suddenly froze just ahead of her. "It's a good thing I was watching where I was going Branchwa....By the High Ones! Noooooo!!!" she looked to the direction he was looking in and her shiny eyes widened just as the howl from her Father sounded. Her face turned to fear and anger again as she let her Wolf blood rule her at long last. She saw too many around her Sire to get to him at the moment so she turned facing the way she had just come looking back to see if Wasp was still after them.
She was standing just beside Branchwalker as she faced opposite of him. she prepared her bow shooting two arrows towards the mad elves about to reach her Sire then looked back the way they came. She shot three arrows at the mad elves catching up to them. Reaching for Branchwalker, Silvereyes howled a response to her Father and tribe. She placed a firm hand to Branchwalker's shoulder nudging him. "This is not the time to loose your mind. Our tribe needs us! Snap out of it Branchwalker!
"I can't help Father but I need to go to Haze and Treebreese now, I won't leave you thought, so please, help me help move them?!" she took her hand back as she notched another arrow but weakly released it as she was grabbed by the arm of another mad elf. It was not looking good for her at the moment. She felt her bow snap as another pushed her down and they kept kicking and trying to stab her.
She was not going to let these mad elves win. She stabbed each of them in their right foot making them move back away from her. Getting up to her feet again was not easy but she managed. She felt awful but felt she could manage a run back to the tent of the wounded if Branchwalker was able? She looked back up to his face worried but hopeful and with calm voice spoke to him. "We can make it if we are together, we need to go now." She held her arms out with blades in both hands as she protected her friend till he gathered his senses again. It was all she could do as her mind rilled with the urgency of getting back to her family and held onto hope they could all find each other better than the last time.
