Branchwalker wrapped the fur he was carrying just a little tighter around himself, closed his eyes and curled in on himself to try to protect himself against the harsh wind.
He still wasn't used to this barren, tree-less landscape. It didn't matter that they'd traveled through it for more than three eights of days, the lack of hiding places and the gales out here still made him uncomfortable and nervous. Anything could appear behind the next grass covered hill and they would have no bushes to hide in, no trees to climb.
Dawngazer gritted her teeth as the wind pushed against her, nearly tearing her from Stronglegs' back. She too longed to get back into the woods. The openness made her edgy, but not completely for the same reasons as those her soul brother had. Her hunting skills had to be adapted to this new terrain and she felt clumsy, like a cub on her first hunt. And Stronglegs was not pleased, which affected her as well.
She bit back a sigh of frustration. At least they weren't short of prey. Those odd pack-living animals with the sharp hooves had been interesting to hunt and hadn't tasted half bad. What were they called now again?
**What is it we've been hunting? I've forgotten,** she open-sent, trying to distract herself from the cold of the wind and disturbing openness of the grass lands.
SilverEyes tugged on the fur to get it closer and looked to Dawngazer. **I've forgotten as well.** she sent to her.
TreeBreeze was riding BlueEyes, leaning forwards to let less wind touch him. BlueEyes gave a soft whine when the wind hit him in the face. He didn’t' like that.
QuickSand went closer to LizardStalker.
Sunsleaf's open-sent was somewhat subdued after so many days in the open but she responded all the same, ** Others I have known call them long-runners or no-horns. There were other names, but I've forgotten those. **
As they traveled through the harsh winds she leaned close to WhiteEars and kept her head down as much as possible, looking to in directions that did not put her face to the wind trying to keep watch to the sides as they were exposed out here in the grasses. There had been herbs she had found as they traveled, but still she worried for her new packmates. Especially one, who seemed to only have gotten more uncomfortable and more tired since they began traveling this tree-forsaken place. She spared a glance forward in the group to see him curled up once more and gritted her teeth wishing there were something she could. Something... anything that would help.
Branchwalker chose that moment to steal a glance over his shoulder and caught Sunsleaf looking in his direction. He gave her a shaky smile, sensing her worry and trying to soothe it. He didn't want her to feel any worse than she surely already was - they all more or less were, from what he could tell, no matter if they had had their Holt burned down or not - especially not because of him.
Sunsleaf smiled a little at Branchwalker and shook her head, **( You can play that game if you wish. But it will not change the way I think. )** She sent a saucy wink his way before blushing and then turning her gaze to the others.
Branchwalker didn't quite know how to respond to that. When Sunsleaf winked at him he too blushed and turned around to let his eyes rest on the back of Dawngazer's head. He liked Sunsleaf, she was kind interesting to talk to, but...
*Sparkstone.* The name, and its owner, had been haunting his thoughts ever since the Holt was set a-flame. Somewhere far behind them his lovemate was trapped by the trolls or perhaps worse. Buried in a cave-in perhaps? Beaten to death? Branchwalker had to bite down on his tongue at that, to stifle a sob.
**(And which way is it that you're thinking?)** he finally decided on replying, now even more desperate for a distraction than before. He couldn't dwell on Sparkstone's faith - the faith of more than a few tribe members. He had to focus on their goal: getting help. Somewhere they would find more elves, would find the bird-bloods. They would return and free the lost ones. He had to believe that or he'd go mad.
Sunsleaf watched him and blushed a little herself. When he asked his question she thought on it a moment and then replied, her send soft, gentle, **( I think you hurt deep in your heart. You all lost so much, you lost someone dear to you. Someone whose fate is unknown, someone who can never be replaced. )** Her gaze dropped as she sent to him, **( I only wish I could soothe some of that pain. To ease your burden just a little. A weight shared by two is lighter than when borne by one alone. )**
Branchwalker fell silent, carefully thinking over Sunsleaf's words and their implication. After a long moment he seemed to have made some kind of decision. He sent again, this time an image of a male elf, with long brown hair and purple eyes shining with mirth.
~**Sparkstone, my lovemate. I...I think he was captured by the trolls. He might still be alive somewhere, in an underground chamber, kept closed off from the moons and stars. And I'm not there with him...**~ There wasn't really need for more explaining; the bone-deep grief in Branchwalker's sending spoke loudly enough. The loss of his parents was one thing, as where the loss of all the other of their tribemates that had been made into spirits. To know that Sparkstone could be alive, left behind by them at the mercy of the trolls, was sickening and Branchwalker had never felt guiltier in his entire life.
Sunsleaf closed her eyes and nodded to herself mostly, the send she returned was filled with a sadness for his loss but also a bit of sadness that this was not someone she might get to meet in this world. Yet, again, there was the offer of comfort the offer to share this burden that he bore alone. It was only after a long, long moment that words entered into the lock-sending, **( If there is a way to recover him I will be there.. in the fight to return him to your side. )**
Branchwalker felt his eyes tear up and had to take a few calming breaths to prevent himself from sobbing out loud. He felt a little pathetic at being so touched by Sunsleaf's words, but still lock-sent her a wave of honest gratitude.
SilverEyes heard what Sunsleaf had sent. **I like the name long- runners.** she sent softly.
TreeBreeze smiled at his sister's sending.
**I like it too,** Branchwalker added to the conversation, happy for a distraction. **It suits them. They're quite beautiful, when you think about it. Graceful in a way that's very unlike the wolves, but still interesting.**
**They taste good too,** Dawngazer commented with a wide grin, making Branchwalker roll his eyes. **What? Don't say you disagree. It's the best meat we've eaten for nights! And don't get me wrong; they're swift and impressive, just like many other animals, but after nights scares of food I mostly enjoy them as prey.**
Branchwalker was about to reply to that when he spotted something in the distance, coming closer by the heartbeat.
Off in the small distance there was an elf riding a pronghorn. Another elf was walking beside it with a big white fox next to him. Another fox was daring and went up close to the others, a bit wary of the wolves. The elf on top of the pronghorn saw the others and urged his mount to run towards the group of elves and wolves. **Who are you?** he sent out to them. The elf in the back mounted his fox and rode forward. Looking to the other one. They both had no trouble with the wind or the cold. It just didn't phase them at all. The one atop the pronghorn was happy, **My name is ClearIce and this is my brother Brighty.** he introduced themselves to the others.
TreeBreeze looked at them in awe, but more in the way that their bonds were very different. **(What is that?)** he lock-sent to his sister, referring to the pronghorn.
SilverEyes turned to see the others. She put her hand on one of her daggers. Once they came up and seemed to be friendly, she brought her hand back up to help with getting to keep warm. **(I don't know. It is a strange creature.)** she lock-sent to her brother. She walked over beside him and his bond. **My name is SilverEyes.** she introduced herself to them. **What are those?** she asked them, pointing to their animals.
Dawngazer narrowed her eyes, making her appear thoughtful, though not hostile. Two of the approaching creatures were clearly elves - one of them had even sent, so there was no doubt in her mind about that - but their companions...
The two smaller creatures she only recognized as foxes by the general shapes of their bodies. The smallest of the two looked very much a like a fox kit; small, red and swift. The second one on the other hand was almost as large as Stronglegs and had completely white fur. Had it not been for the apparent fox-like shape of it's body and scent she'd most likely thought it to be a wolf. And the largest of the creatures she had no clue to what it could be. It had horns much like a branch-horn and similar built, but it smelled different.
**I am Dawngazer,** she finally introduced herself after a moment's open-mouthed staring. **And this wolf is my bond-friend Stronglegs.**
**I'm Branchwalker,** her soul brother sent a heartbeat later. His mind voice was a warm, friendly greeting, with background noise of worry, exhaustion and fear. **Clear paths and good hunting to you both.** It was a traditional Tall Tree Holt greeting. A little more formal than usual, but it seemed to fit the situation.
**One-Edge,** came from the elfess riding Softpaws. **My lifemate's name is Longsong.**
Sunsleaf was not quite so certain about the elves with the unusual bonds and so she waited until most if not all of the others had introduced themselves before she added her own greeting and introduction. ** Sunsleaf. Heyla and well met. **
**I'm Bloodmane,** the red-haired elfess sent, then continued privately to Dawngazer, who apparently had become quite much the leader for their small group while she had been sick, **(Do you think we can trust them?)** It wasn't that much of a problem here, out in the open, but following them did mean they might be following these strangers straight into an ambush.
Dawngazer started a bit at Bloodmane's sending. She had to admit that after having come over the initial surprise she felt a bit proud of having been addressed by the older female, to having been asked for her opinion. Then again, she was one of the oldest now. ** (There's only two of them, and even with their bond-friends we could defeat them, if it came to fighting. If we keep on our toes, I think we'll be safe.)**
**We are cold,** she answered BrightStar, sounding both wary and friendly. She was excited about meeting new elves, but was still a little put off by the fact that these strangers weren't alone. **And I at least thank you for your hospitality.** She felt a little uncomfortable speaking for the whole tribe, so she left her reply open for protest from the others. If someone didn't want to follow these new elves, they had their chance to speak.
**Are there others with you? Your tribe?** she added as an afterthought. Sendings couldn't lie after all.
Riv remained quiet. Great, more strangers. At least with Griel's group he had about known who was who, even though he never really knew anyone personally. Here he knew by name just Dawngazer from the hunting trips, her soul brother Branchwalker, and the redhead (Bloodmane) who at least had somewhat stopped ordering him around. And the worst of it was that he couldn't even leave whenever it would suit him - in these flatlands all the meat came in huge groups and a solitary hunter had next to no chance. With all his traveling food long ago eaten, he would starve in no time.
BrightStar looked to them carefully, **Come, let's get out of this wind. There's a make-shift camp just a little ways off. Brother, take the lead.** he sent. He looked to the others, **That is if you'll come with us. You look cold.** he sent.
ClearIce nodded and saw the curious looks. **This is a pronghorn. His name is Prongs. Almost like a branchhorn, but quicker and harder to take down.** he sent.
TreeBreeze just watched and stayed with his sister.
SilverEyes looked to the others, **(I say we go with them. It might be good.)** was all she sent.
QuickSand was next to LizardStalker and was amazed at seeing the big pronghorns. She then shivered as another wind blew through her.
LizardStalker pulled his fur around QuickSand and himself. He watched the big deer-like animal. He was fascinated by it. Sprinter stood next to the two cubs, helping block more of the wind for them.
ChildWolf looked to ClearIce and BrightStar. **I'm ChildWolf, these two are LizardStalker, my brother, and QuickSand, his friend.** he sent to them.
QuickSand huddled closer to LizardStalker.
SilverEyes looked to the others.
**Should we perhaps get going?** Branchwalker asked, visibly shuddering in the cold. **A shelter sounds as welcome as fresh meat during a stormy Harsh-Wind night.** He tried to keep his mind voice as warm and friendly as possibly, although the suspicious mindset of his tribemates had put him a little on edge.
**(I'm sure we can trust them. They're elves, aren't they?)** Branchwalker wasn't foolish, he knew the tales of the Mad One, the crazy chieftess driven to insanity by the bite of a foam-sick bond- friend, but she was long gone. These two seemed neither ill nor hostile, why be so wary of them?
**Yes, why not. I'm as cold as the rest of you, shelter sounds very nice,** Dawngazer commented and gave Stronglegs a command to begin walking.
**(Keep eyes high everyone!)** she lock-sent to her tribemates and the two strangers she'd come to think of as "almost tribe" - Sunsleaf and Riv. **(I don't think we have much to fear either, but we can't be too careful.)**
One-Edge and Longsong each lock-sent a curt 'yes' and with wary glances at BrightStar and ClearIce urged Softpaws to follow Stronglegs.
ChildWolf knew his brother was cold. He was too. **Shelter is good.** he sent out softly.
**Are you too cold?** Branchwalker couldn't help but ask. He still hadn't quite gotten over the fact that ChildWolf had been injured. Bloodmane was one thing - she was older than him, older than his soul sister even. ChildWolf was...different. Although he'd had time to recover they'd been traveling ever since the troll attack and a head injury was never something to just shrug off. Still, Branchwalker trusted Sunsleaf's skills at herbal healing. She had surely taken good care of ChildWolf, but one could never be too careful.
ChildWolf gave a very slight nod.
~**Good...**~ Branchwalker sent again, feeling a little silly. ~**You will say something if you're too cold or dizzy, right?**~ He couldn't help asking though, he was too on edge.
~**Are you well cubs?**~ he then lock-sent to QuickSand and LizardStalker, to balance his concern.
LizardStalker just listened to the others. He kept himself and QuickSand warm.
BrightStar urged his mount to go to the side. He motioned for them to follow his brother. He knew that the sooner they got to the shelter, the sooner they would get warm. ClearIce saw them behind him, so he stopped to see if they would come with them or not.
TreeBreeze looked to his sister and then urged his mount forward. He knew shelter would ease the wind and that was what he wanted. **How far is this shelter?** he asked them.
BrightStar looked to him, **Just ahead. You can see the outline of the shelter if you have eyes that are trained for the plains.** he sent to them. Tyke came over and looked up to BrightStar. The male pointed to the side, telling the swift fox to go hunt in that direction. Skye carried BrightStar with the others.
Dawngazer narrowed her eyes, to try and spot said shelter, but all she saw were endless hills of grass and the occasional scrawny tree. Not very encouraging.
Branchwalker tightened his grip around Dawngazer's waist slightly, still throwing anxious looks over his shoulder at ChildWolf and the cubs. They needed shelter - they all did - but what if there really was something wrong with these two strangers...
ChildWolf knew that Branchwalker was checking on him. He felt irritated at first, but calmed down when he realized he would've done the same for him.
LizardStalker looked to his brother and then back to QuickSand. He was still worried about his brother, but knew that his brother could take care of himself.
