Bloodmane stood just outside the shelter, stretching her arms and legs and smiling very much like the old Sunset for a change. She hadn't slept on furs since...well, since their last skirmish with the trolls. They had shelter, and some peace to restock, and almost all wounds gotten during the battle had healed without infections. Their chances of survival were looking good right now. And, after such a good night's sleep, she could forget for a moment the horrors that had occurred in their holt. **Coming, Sunsleaf?** she sent, picking up a leather pouch borrowed from BrightStar. The still injured (mainly, One-Edge) would stay and watch the cubs, she would go with Sunsleaf to look for herbs, and the rest would try and either hunt or gather them something to eat and perhaps also to store for later.
Looking from Branchwalker to Bloodmane Sunsleaf nodded, "All right." She had thought that she and Branchwalker were going to hunt for herbs and something for him to make some baskets or something with, but plans changed and this was fine. It would give her a chance to get to know Bloodmane. She gathered her own pouches and made her way over to the other red-head and smiled brightly.
Branchwalker's lips tugged up in a slightly regretful smile. He didn't quite feel up to a hunt at the moment, but they had few hunters to spare. Going with Sunsleaf and Bloodmane to seek herbs would have been a much more suitable activity for him, but with One-Edge injured and Bloodmane hunting for important healing herbs they were only four hunters - and even that was an uncertain number. He didn't know yet if any of the two strangers would join the hunt and Riv looked to be going off on his own. The risk was that they'd be left with only himself, Dawngazer, SilverEyes and their small wolf pack. Not favorable odds. **Please bring back some of those plants you spoke of,** he sent, speaking to Sunsleaf. **Hopefully I will get a chance to weave baskets after the hunt.**
Sunsleaf looked over to Branchwalker and smiled, with a wink she nodded, ** I will bring back what I find, and perhaps you can teach me some of the skill... then I can be more useful. ** Her attention shifted to Dawngazer, "If you need WhiteEars, take her. She'll enjoy the hunting you'll be doing more than the hunting I'll be doing."
Branchwalker returned her smile. **You have already contributed a great deal,** he sent. **But if you wish I'll teach you. We'll need all the skills we have. Sharing them is a good thing.** He didn't add 'if more of us are lost', but it hung in the air for a moment.
Sunsleaf blushed slightly and nodded to him as she picked up her pouches and emptied her pack to allow for more space. She also gathered several lengths of leather strapping that she used for a variety of purposes and then looked to Bloodmane, ** It seems we are ready to depart.**
"Whiteears will be most welcome," Dawngazer said, breaking the slightly bleak silence after Branchwalker's sending. "We need all hunters we can spare, two- or four-legged does not matter."
Bloodmane returned Sunsleaf's smile with one of her own. "Lead on," she gestured, "You know the herbs that grow here better than I do." Riv might have been helpful too, having traveled in many places, but the cub had been too hostile to even approach and just dragging someone by force to gather medicinal herbs was dangerous business. One mistake might lead to someone's death.
She smiled and nodded again, "She will appreciate the chance to hunt." With WhiteEars going off with the hunters she felt a little better as it was, in some small way, contributing to the food gathering. One more smile at Branchwalker and she slipped to the entrance heading out with Bloodmane on their quest for herbs and materials Branchwalker would need. She waved to the others, Dawngazer, Longsong, ClearIce, Brightstar, and then she was off on the search.
Longsong had gotten dressed much earlier, but had yet not left One- Edge's side. He'd offered to stay behind to watch the cubs and give a helping hand with wounds - he had no true knowledge of such things, but if something bad should happen, unlikely as it may seem, it was good to have a fast runner and good sender near by. He was by no means the best sender the tribe had ever had, but a healthy body counted a lot when it came to any mental talk. Pain distracted you and good legs could lessen the sending range.
Riv checked the bindings of his spear one more time, then looked in a bit hostile way at the elves crowding the small shelter. There was to be a hunt, which would have been fun if that annoying Dawngazer, who constantly snapped at him, wouldn't have been coming along (or at least he assumed that was the case). Herb-gathering wasn't a valid alternative either, because the redhead would be there, even though he'd need to restock his own medical supplies too. Maybe he'd walk back to the river and catch some fish. Yeah, that was a good idea.
Dawngazer frowned slightly at Riv's less than friendly look. It might have been directed at the whole tribe, but that just made the matter worse on her opinion. Acting grumpy about it wouldn't help though, that'd just give him reason for his angry behavior. No, better try and make peace, at least for the time being. "Planning to run off by yourself again?" she called over to him, keeping her voice neutral. "We're going after long-runners again - they're good eating and they're a lot of meat on them. We could use all the hands we have on this hunt and your spear is one of the few good weapons we have left."
Riv's first reaction was to take Dawngazer's words as a compliment and almost agree on the spot. Being needed made him feel important and somehow superior. Although, now that he considered it, he wasn't too sure what she had actually meant - especially with the question. But hunting was more fun than fishing - and meat better than fish - so..."Feh," he turned his eyes away from her, "Alright, I'll join your hunt. But I do not ride wolves." The truth was, he couldn't ride, but he wasn't about to admit that.
"Do as you wish," Dawngazer replied with a shrug. The wolves were still tired from the previous night (or rahter, eight of nights) of walking without rest, so there wouldn't be much riding until they found prey. If Riv wished to be left behind when the action started, so be it. Hopefully he'd be of some help still.
Branchwalker had slung the bow he'd borrowed from Dawngazer over his shoulder. It wasn't his most prefered weapon, but a much safer choice than his usual dagger. There was too great a risk that he'd fall off and be trampled if he tried to lung at the neck of one of the long-runners. They couldn't afford any more injuries, especially not when they all still were so hungry and tired. The day's worth of sleep had felt good, extremely so, but it hadn't been enough to completely chase away the bonedeep weariness he felt. "Who are hunting?" he asked to no one in particular. The wolves could only take one rider each if they wanted a good hunt and he wasn't sure if they'd accepted the bonds' of BrightStar and ClearIce yet, so there could be trouble. Branchwalker had decided to ride Bluefang, as that would leave him far enough back in the pack to fire arrows, but not too far. Dawngazer would be riding Stronglegs and Softpaws was free as Longsong and One-Edge both seemed to be staying behind (One-Edge would most surely be talked down by everyone if she as much as suggested joining the hunt), but still...
One-Edge gave the hunting party a longing look, but nodded as her life-mate frowned at her. The wolfrider couldn't stop herself from limping around though, double-checking weapons and equipment. She'd fashioned a crutch to support herself and the wound in her thigh didn't seem life-threatening any longer, but it would be a while until she could run and hunt again. It gnawed at her, this forced helplessness when her tribe needed her most... She was a huntress after all, a tracker and fisher - to be sitting at home minding the cubs at a time like this..! Hastily, she glanced at Longsong again. Blushing slightly the brunette elfess lowered her gaze and stared at the ground, gathering her thoughts. It was no shame to be wounded, not really - and her lifemate didn't think himself too good to stay at the shelter. Why should she? Was one half-lame huntress that indisposable? A crooked smile touched her lips. No, it was best that she stayed here. She could try mending some of the clothes and equipment left behind. That was a useful task. Looking over at the hunting party, she called out. "Branchwalker? Softpaws might hunt with you, but I don't know if she'll take a rider. Or should I keep her here?" The wolfrider looked around. She found the red hair of Bloodmane, shimmering in the light, and watched her quizically. "What do you think, Bloodmane? Are we in any danger here?"
Branchwalker started a bit at being adressed by One-Edge - having focused so much on the task at hand - but quickly smiled at her. "I think the pack needs as many wolves as we have, rider or no rider. Or what do you think Dawngazer?"
Dawngazer merely gave a nod, her attention still on Riv, waiting for his reply.
Longsong gave his lifemate an encouraging smile. He had already gathered a small pile of things that needed to be repaired or improved, anything to help One-Edge keep her mind off the hunt. He could understand her frustration, but had no wish for her to injure herself further. ChildWolf was wounded as well, so at least she wouldn't have to feel singled out. "Come help me lifemate," he said, gesturing at the items he'd gathered. "Food is not all we need."
Bloodmane looked back inside as she heard her name called. She pondered the question for a moment before answering. "The trolls won't follow us this far. It's too open ground and they can't tolerate the sun." At least she hoped their hatred towards that "bright, burning ball" outweighed their desire to catch the remaining elves. "Predators, I don't know." Nothing had approached them this far, but a party of many wolves and elves was a different thing than a few cubs and wounded. "BrightStar, ClearIce, are the predators here a threat?" she turned to their hosts, who must have known these flatlands better.
BrightStar was busy trying to find his good knife and didn't hear Bloodmane's question. ClearIce heard her and thought, **I don't think the bears are out this time of year. It's close for them to be sleeping. Longcats are common around here, but they most likely won't bother us. If you see a whitestripe, get away fast. You will stink for a half-moon.** he sent out the dangers to them. **Short-tails are on the otherside of the plains at this time of year. Near-wolves and other wolves are just scavenging. Won't bother us unless we provoke them.** he sent to her as well.
BrightStar found his good knife and listened to his brother name off the predators. He just grinned, **Feel like hunting still?** he sent teasingly.
**I am going to gather herbs, not hunt,** Bloodmane pointed out with just a tiniest bit of humor in her sending. But she did check that her dagger was still in her belt. ~**It's the cubs and wounded I'm worried about,**~ she added in a completely serious tone and in lock- sending, lest the cubs and wounded themselves heard.
BrightStar looked to Riv, **Riding won't matter much. It's the hunting skill that counts the most. You seem like a very good hunter.** he sent. Since he sent, it was the truth. He had his blowgun in his belt and the darts on a strap that hangs across his chest. He had his javelin and his spear next to him. He looked to see what ClearIce would be using. ClearIce went up to him and looked to him. **Fishing...I need your spear.** he sent to him. BrightStar let him take his spear. **I'll be fishing, if anyone should need me. Prongs will help locate prey for you, if you want.** he sent to the other hunters.
"Is that safe for Prongs?" Branchwalker asked, looking concerned. "Our wolves are hungry and in the mids of a hunt they might not...be so careful with what they aim at. They have just met your bond, I'm not sure they've completely accepted him as a part of the 'pack' yet." Not that Branchwalker thought they'd actually include the pronghorn in the pack, but he knew they could come to respect that Prongs wasn't prey. The question was just if that time was now or not.
"Perhaps he should go with you for the time being," Dawngazer cut in. "To be on the safe side. Losing your bond-friend to ours would be painful to all of us. And you'll have company fishing." She didn't quite like the idea of ClearIce running off on his own to fish. He might be both an adult and a stranger, but she was quite sure she was his elder and therefore felt a sort of responsibility for him. She shook her head at herself in her mind. Silly of her, being such a worry-wart. Wouldn't have happened before... "Besides, if there was a fight I'm convinced your bond'd spear more than a few of the pack on his horns before they got as much as a chance to bite him. It's as much for their safety as for his."
Riv grinned at the compliment, his mood improving. "Of course I am a good hunter," he commented to nobody in particular.
Behind Riv's back Dawngazer rolled her eyes at him. Such a cub. "Well, shall we leave then?" she asked, addressing all of the hunters - as many they now where. "The wolves should be able to pick up a scent swiftly if we leave now when the weather is favorable." The wind had been blowing harshly for the past nights. It wasn't calm outside yet - it never seemed to be calm out here were no trees grew - but the wind was tame enough not to confuse your nose.

**Where to?** Bloodmane asked, then suggested, **The river?** Even though she didn't know the plants around here, the one constant about all plants was that they needed water. River and lakesides were always full of plant-life, no matter where you were (well, at least in her limited experience). Maybe not medicinal herbs, but with luck they might at least find a few willows.
Sunsleaf nodded a little, ** I would like to stop midway to the river and see what, if anything, I can find. This is not a place I am familiar with, but I might recognize some of the plants. **
Bloodmane nodded in agreement. **If you do, please teach them to me,** she sent, **I don't really know that many plants - I'm a tanner, after all, not a healer.** She smiled a bit uneasily at the latter. The silence made her somewhat uncomfortable. All in all, having time and energy to think made her feel uncomfortable. It should have been good that they didn't have to struggle for their lives at every step, but at least the struggle had kept her from dwelling in the memories. She shook her head, trying to get rid of the memories. 'Focus on the good things, Falen,' she reminded herself, 'The tribe comes first, and here...the tribe can survive.'
Sunsleaf nodded and smiled, ** Of course. It always helps to have two pairs of eyes when hunting for herbs. ** As Bloodmane continued Sunsleaf tipped her head to one side, ** Perhaps we might find something for coloring the leathers you make? There are new plants here, perhaps some will be suited to that purpose.**
Bloodmane pondered the suggestion for a moment, biting her lower lip slightly. Dyeing leathers took time, but tanning them also did. And it was unlikely they were going anywhere for at least the next two hands of days. Then she smiled. **That sounds like a good idea.** Suddenly she stopped, her eyes having caught a glimpse of familiar shape of leaves. It was smaller than in the forest, almost vanishing in the surrounding grass in contrary to the stems reaching above her waist, but still familiar. "Look! It's woundroot!" she said, kneeling and holding one plant between her hands. "Lots of it!"
Sunsleaf knelt down beside the other red-head, "Very good eyes. We shall have to go slower or miss things like this." Her fingers grazed the leaves lightly as she brushed them aside letting her fingers slide carefully into the soil with gentle digging. The root went deeper than she was used to in the forest, but perhaps it needed to in this place. "Leaves will dry quicker for teas, but we'll have to take roots. We don't want to strip too many leaves from each." Then her gaze shifted, her head tilted and she leaned in to sniff carefully at one of the neighboring plants. Something in the back of her mind was telling her it was a healing herb, but she had not seen it before. Her fingers had brushed the tendrils of root as they slide down into the soil along the root of the first herb, but she didn't know this, and it would only confuse her more if she did know it. The magic was buried so deeply and so gently that she was unaware she had it at all, but it always pointed her in the right direction for herbs. To her it was simply instinct, to others... some thought it odd, others thought her exceptionally lucky, and one or two had thought her a fraud. Reaching her free hand out she broke off a small leaf from the plant and crushed it between her fingers, the minty smell filled the air, but one different than those she was used to. Her green gaze shifted to Bloodmane, "We should take some of this as well."
Bloodmane, now on her hands and knees digging the roots, turned her attention from the woundroots to the plant Sunsleaf was now examining. "What is it?" she asked. She didn't know that one, but it surely smelled good. Maybe it could be used for tea? But she did know better than to assume that much - even deadly poisonous plants could have a sweet smell. Even though Bloodmane didn't notice it, such an everyday task as collecting herbs was quickly pulling her out of the horrors they had experienced back in the holt. But then again, her mother Dawnthreader had always said that when you're upset, you need to give your hands and mind something else to do.

ChildWolf checked on his brother then went over to Longsong. "What can I do?" he asked. He wanted to help any way he could.
Longsong looked up from the hole in his shirt he was mending. "Hmm, you could perhaps give me a hand with finding holes. I'm trying to make our bags and furs last a bit longer." He turned to One-Edge. "Is there something you need help with, lifemate?" He didn't really have anything more to task ChildWolf with - they hardly had anything to work with at the moment, so they couldn't try making new tools, just repair what they already had. When the others got back there would be a lot of work, but as it was they couldn't do much more than rest. "How's your head ChildWolf?"
ChildWolf picked up something and went to looking for holes in it. He was working on this until he heard Longsong's question. He really didn't want to asnwer it. But he knew that if he didn't Longsong might think that something else was wrong. His mind was going through many things that he was thinking of and started to get a headache from it. He put a hand to his forehead. "Still hurts at times." he finally answered.
LizardStalker kept near QuickSand.
"Cubs, would you like to hear a story?" Longsong ask LizardStalker and QuickSand. If he let them sit around doing nothing they might be tempted to amuse themselves by sneaking off outside.
LizardStalker looked up to Longsong quickly. He loved hearing stories. **Can we?** he asked with enthusiasm. He took a seat to where he was facing the older male with eyes focused on him. **QuickSand?** he asked, wondering if she was coming.
QuickSand went over to LizardStalker and sat down next to him. **Yeah, story.** she sent with as much enthusiasm as LizardStalker had.
One-Edge smiled at her lifemate. She sat with her good leg tucked in under the other one, a piece of leather forming a bowl in her lap to catch wayward chips or splinters as she sharpened the edges of some particulary blunted weapons. The huntress in her was too deeply ingrained for her to leave tracks behind even at the shelter, particulary sharp ones that might get stepped on. "Yes, go on," the elfess murmured. She'd always enjoyed her younger mate's storytelling, and something within reminded her that the Lore-Keeper was important if the Tribe was to remain a Tribe and not just a gathering of elves. "I've always liked the one of Stronghands and Treemender."
Longsong smiled, elated that he'd been able to light a spark of interest in the cubs and his lifemate. They needed a distraction from...everything so they could relax and rest. "Which tale would that be then?" he asked One-Edge, still smiling. Her suggestion had been perfect, a former chief close enough in time to feel familiar, without being the one they'd just lost. One night, when there was a new chief, there would be Howls told about Clearmind. Now was still too soon. "Stronghands did many things that spawned tales," he elaborated. "Shall I tell you the time Treemender played a prank on him? Or the time they challenged each other to a fishing contest?" He kept the suggested tales light. The Howl of Stronghands and Treemender's Recognition, while cheerful, would only serve to remind them of the loss of Clearmind. And anything involving fighting, well...
"The fishing," she replied almost immediately. Her dark brown eyes gleamed when they met his light ones. A tiny dimple showed near the corner of her mouth. "Mother used to say she didn't eat a redfin for years after." Turning her head, she glanced at Childwolf and stood up. The spills she'd gathered in her lap were swiftly buried, and she arranged the sharpened weapons in a neat pile. Then she motioned the red-haired wolfrider over and bent to pick up some long, slender sticks. "While we listen... We don't have much to make spearpoints of, that I know. But I thought we'd do it the old way, harden them in the fire and scrape them sharp. Help me?"
ChildWolf went over to where she was. He nodded to her. He took one and watched her carefully, not wanting to make a mistake. His mind started wandering and he just stayed there with a blank look on his face. He then turned to her, looking at her.
One-Edge frowned at him. She leaned forward and blew at the embers of the fire-place, light dancing and throwing odd shadows over her oval face, and placed one of the spears-to-be with it's tip among the embers. Slowly rotating it to harden and burn it equally, the wolfrider female grumbled: "Well? Don't just stare, hop to it cub!" His blankness rubbed her the wrong way, annoying like a small pebble under ones bedfurs. One-Edge had little sympathy for inactivity. Though they had been through a lot, of course... Her countenance softened somewhat, dark eyes flicking from Childwolf to Lizardstalker. In a slightly more kind voice she added: "Or sit with your brother. I'll work while I listen."
LizardStalker was just sitting waiting to hear the story. He was getting excited.
ChildWolf looked down and quickly went to work. He didn't understand why she had said that to him. It was confusing. He wanted to ask her why she did what she did, but was too scared to.
LizardStalker heard One-Edge and turned to his brother. He looked confused and worried. He then looked to One-Edge for an answer. Sprinter went over to her bond and layed her head in his lap. LizardStalker scratched Sprinter behind her ears like he has done before.
The brusque wolfrider sighed and rolled her eyes as she began scraping the spear into a point. How long had Childwolf been with the Tribe now? Two eights-of-hands and then some, she decided after some thinking, and still he looked as if she'd bit him rather than told him to wake up and do something. One-Edge shook her head and glanced at Lizardstalker, making herself smile kindly at the cub. He at least had an excuse, being barely more than two hands old. "Sit and rest, cub... I think you should look at Sprinter's paws too, now that you're resting. See that he doesn't have any sores or cracks."
LizardStalker nodded and had Sprinter lay on her side. He then started to look at her paws. He scratched her belly while he was at it. Both of her back paws were alright, but her front left paw had a slight crack. **What do I do about this?** he asked One-Edge. He was worried about his bond's paw.
ChildWolf kept working on the one spear he had in his hand.
Longsong frowned a little at the exchange. Though he hadn't been One- Edge's lifemate for very long he knew her. Her dislike for inactiviety was well known in the tribe, but he had hoped she'd be able not to snap at any of the young ones. At least she'd caught herself in her small outbrust, before she said anything offensive. "We're all a bit uneasy still," he spoke, addressing everyone. "ChildWolf, One-Edge meant nothing ill. Come sit here with us if you feel tired, I'm just about to begin the story." He made a pause, making sure he had everyone's attention, then began: "Turns and turns ago, before any of us, Stronghands was the tribe's chief. Before he Recognized he had many furmates, but no thought of love- or lifemating ever crossed his mind, even when he began to near the age of an Elder. One of his furmates, Treemender, decided to change that, but she had no idea of how to get his attention. Therefore she decided to ask the tribe's Lore Keeper for advice. Can you guess what he suggested?" Longsong would have preferred to make it a Howl, with singing and dancing, but this was not the best of places for it and he had not the energy needed. Better keep the story simple and allow the others to talk as well.
ChildWolf nodded to him, not wanting to speak. He felt better, but still didn't like what had happened. He listned to the story while he kept working.
LizardStalker heard the story and didn't know. **No, what?** he asked Longsong. He was getting excited about the story.
One-Edge chuckled quietly. She smiled at her mate, a sending of feelings like a butterfly's touch against his mind. The young ones... They made it all worth it. The way they explored the world for the first time, heard every story for the first time, made their mistakes or won their battles, each and every emotion clear in their youthful faces... A pang of sorrow stabbed at her as she remembered a cub who'd never get to go on his first hunt, but the huntress gritted her teeth and shook the memory off like a wolf shaking water from his pelt. That was then, and this was Now. This was what mattered. She glanced at the paw LizardStalker worried over, and nodded. From a small pouch she produced a tiny wooden box. The elfess opened it and looked inside, frowned, but threw it in an underhanded toss to the cubling. It had a small amount of salve inside, smelling of honey and fat and some herb. "Put some on," she advised. "Get rid of any dirt first. It's this terrain, it's not as good as the forest."
LizardStalker caught what One-Edge threw. He put it down next to him and went to cleaning the dirt off of Sprinter's paw. She tried to sit up and go to her paw. She didn't like him messing with it. Once he got all the dirt, he took the stuff that One-Edge threw to him and put some on her paw. **Is that all?** he asked her.
ChildWolf stopped his work and put a hand to his head. His minor headache was back and making itself known to him.
QuickSand was listening intently to Longsong when she saw ChildWolf out of the corner of her eye. She turned to him and went over to him carefully. "What's wrong?" she asked him softly.
TreeBreeze looked over to ChildWolf and QuickSand. He looked to One- Edge since she was closer to them than he was. **(Will he be alright?) ** he locksent to One-Edge. **ChildWolf?** he asked him. He was worried about his age-mate.
**(I am no Healer, I don't know,)** the huntress replied. She sighed and stood, giving her lifemate an apologetic look. It seemed as if his story would have to be postponed. Removing her work from the fire, she took a couple of quick, limping steps to Childwolf's side. The brown-haired elfess winced at the pained look on his face. "Childwolf?" she asked quietly. "You seem pained. Is it your head again?" Slender fingers reached out, touched his hair. One-Edge gently searched for a wound or bump. She tried, but couldn't scent anything except for woodsmoke and Childwolf's usual scent. That probably meant no white-pus with it's sickly sweet smell, which at least was a comfort. On the other hand, if it wasn't a wound that bled, One-Edge wasn't certain what to do about it. She remembered vaguely Flint, her father. They'd all thought the real danger was the wound he'd taken in his arm, gouged by the horns of a deer. No one understood why he complained of stomach pain and why his normally flat abdomen swelled up, until in a desperate attempt to save him someone punctured the swelling and found that the trampling had made him bleed inside. He'd gone soon after... One-Edge remembered howling for him with her mother, together with Mistwing and Oakshade. But it was all very distant now, like a story rather than a memory. She shook her head and concentrated. If Childwolf bled inside his head, maybe there would be a swelling? Or maybe he'd just bumped his brains about a little, that usually led to elves feeling sick and dizzy for quite some time, with headaches and flashes of light as well. She glanced over at QuickSand and TreeBreeze. The elfess shrugged. "Do anyone of you know about healing? Otherwise I think we'll simply have to wait until Bloodmane returns."
TreeBreeze looked to her, "I only know poisons and their antidotes." he said. He was very worried.
ChildWolf just gave a soft whine. He didn't feel like talking or sending. He just wanted the pain to stop. He curled up and laid his head on his knees.
LizardStalker felt sad that his brother was hurting. Sprinter went over to him and put her head on his shoulder. She wanted to help her elf-bond not be sad anymore.
One-Edge shrugged helplessly. She didn't feel a wound, and she didn't find much of a bump. That was more or less all she was able to do. He'd simply have to get through it on his own until Sunsleaf returned... The wolfrider sat down next to Childwolf and cradled his head in her lap. She stroke his head gently, combing his hair out with experienced fingers and softly massaging his temples. After a little while she looked up again and shrugged at Longsong. "We'll just have to wait and see. Please, love, go on."
ChildWolf liked the feeling, his whining got softer. He kept his eyes closed, knowing that if he opened them he would be sick and the pain would hurt worse.
LizardStalker looked from One-Edge back to Longsong. He knew that his brother would be hurting for a while. He looked to the storyteller for the answer that he had asked earlier.
TreeBreeze just watched over ChildWolf as he stayed that way. He looked to One-Edge and back to Longsong. He too waited for the rest of the story. Hoping that it would do some good for the cublings... and for ChildWolf.
Longsong felt One-Edge light mind touch and smiled in agreement. The remaining cubs were the foremost reason he'd been able to come out of the grief he felt after the loss of his own. He still mourned Sweetbreeze fiercly, but the knowledge that the tribe lived on was a relief. He paused in his story telling as ChildWolf's pain was brought to his attention. The poor youth seemed to have quite the head wound. He sat in silence as One-Edge arranged ChildWolf in her lap, waiting for her to give him a sign to continue. When she did he smiled, trying to distract the others from worrying. He was no healer either - herbal or magical - but he knew a thing or two about wounds through pure first hand experience. Head injures could make you feel sick and loud noises usually made things eight times worse, so less talking would most likely do him good. "Well," Longsong spoke in a hushed tone of voice, "he told her the chief could be terribly fickle in his attention, as she already knew, and that the best chance to capture his interest and keep it was to challenge him." He pause for dramatic effect. He doubted anyone had mistaken the word to mean a true challenge for chieftainship, but some suspence was never wrong. "Of course he meant for Treemender to challenge Stronghands in a game. To make sure she'd have a chance against him - for though they were of an age, Stronghands was still her elder - Treemender decided to observe the chief and see if there was any task where her skills exceeded his. So she began to follow him around the Holt, taking great care not to appear to be doing anything out of the ordinary. Then, one night, as she was walking along the river. Do you know what she saw there?"
ChildWolf just stayed where he was, calming down some.
LizardStalker was taking in the story so much that he was watching it in his mind. When Longsong asked the question, he was too far into watching the scene in his mind to hear it. He came out of his 'watching' and turned to the elder elf. He had a curious look on his face.
One-Edge laughed softly. She'd started braiding Childwolf's hair as he rested, keeping her fingers busy. The wolfrider grinned at her mate, reached out and tousled Lizardstalker's hair too. The curious look on his face made her smile again, as the cubling was completely absorbed by the story. "I might remember, my love, but this one will surely start wrestling you for the answer if you do not give it to him quickly."
LizardStalker laughed softly when he felt One-Edge tousle his hair. He looked to her and smiled. He then turned back to Longsong. He loved the story so far and thought that he might want to learn them all. He would have to ask Longsong that sometime later.
"Well," Longsong continued, smiling at his lifemate's and the cubs' antics. "Treemender caught Stronghands attempting to fish with a spear. He wasn't succeeding at all. And he was so startled when Treemender stepped into his line of sight that he lost his ballance and fell into the water." He made a pause to let the others picture the situation. "Needless to say Stronghands was more than eager to accept when Treemender challenged him to a fishing contest. They both prepared for many eights of nights, until the agreed upon time arrived." He open-sent an image of the shore by the cliffs, a night's travel on wolf-back from the Holt. "To make things more interesting they decided to have the competition by the Vastdeep. That way they would not only have to fish, but also scale the steep walls of stone to get down to the water. "The night of the contest came. All of the tribe gathered on the cliffs to watch. Treemender and Stronghands nearly jumped down to the beach, limber as treewees on the steep rocks. Treemender was swifter with the spear, but Stronghands was a better climber. They'd decided that when their spears were full of fish they'd have to climb all the way back up to the others and leave their catch there. That way the competition got much more even." Another dramatic pause. "Who caught the most fish do you think?"
LizardStalker thought about it and then got a small idea, **Was it Treemender?** he asekd him. From what he thought that was the person that he thought had the most fish. He decided to ask Longsong about what he previously thought. At least before he forgot. **(Can I learn all the stories?)** he locksent to the adult.
QuickSand thought about it. **I think it was Stronghands.** she sent her answer. At least one of them would be right, but it was just a story. And she liked stories. She waited anxiously to see who it was.
For a moment LizardStalker's second question shocked Longsong into silence. An apprentice? Could he really take one on? He was hardly more than an apprentice himself! He knew nearly all of the important Howls, yes, but a few had been lost when... A few heartbeats later the surprise was over. He was the Lore Keeper now, wasn't he? Longtale was gone and the other stories lost with him. All they had was him. And hadn't he been about LizardStalker's age when he'd begun to learn the stories of their tribe? **(Of course)** he replied, before saying aloud: "You're both right and wrong at the same time actually. You see..." Just as he was about to finish the story a soft "ping" cut through the night, coming from outside of the shelter. It was almost as if two stones had hit together. Two hurried footsteps followed. Then silence. Longsong felt a shiver go down his spine. Surely the hunting party or Bloodmane and Sunsleaf would have sent if they were heading back? Yet those hadn't been the footsteps of a troll... **Is anyone out there?** he open-sent, giving One-Edge a worried glance. No one answered. **(Lifemate?)** he lock-sent then, not wanting the cubs to hear the almost-panic in his mind voice.
One-Edge perked up at the sound. Eyes widening, she looked in the direction of the footsteps. The hunters? Hardly... Gently she let Childwolf's head down from her lap, and stood in one swift motion. She gave her lifemate a reassuring nod and looked around, fetching one of the newly shaped spears. Hefting the wooden shaft and gauging it's balance, she sent to him **(Sprinter haven't picked up a scent, and neither have I. Could hardly be trolls, it moved too lightly. I'll check.)** Loud, she grumbled: "Lousy whitetails. I bet one got too curious 'bout the fire..." The elfess moved away from the low-burning fire, rather stealthily despite her bad leg. She stopped outside the circle of light and let her eyes adjust. One-Edge took a deep breath and tasted the night air. Too bad the wind came from the wrong direction; she could smell woodsmoke and wolf, Longsong and Childwolf, but nothing strange or new. Carefully the huntress moved forward, blue shadows hiding many details of the landscape while others were visible in the clear moonlight. **Nothing here,** she sent back to the others. **Probably a ravvit or something. I'll...** One-Edge stopped herself. Something glinted and gleamed, reflecting the moonlight. She sank down on one knee and examined the object carefully without touching it. A crystal? It was beautiful, even in this pale light; blue and clear and obviously shaped by elfin hands. And here she picked up a scent as well; elf, but unknown. Staring out at the darkness in the direction of the tracks, One-Edge reached out with her mind again. **There was something here, but it has left now. Longsong, love, please come look at this.**
Longsong got up and began walking towards the shelter's entrance, giving the others a reassuring smile. One-Edge's sending had held no alarm, thankfully. There seemed to be no imminent danger to worry about. Outside he found One-Edge crouched down, holding something. **What is it?** he sent, not yet feeling safe enough to speak aloud. He reached out to touch the blue crystal and was surprised to feel...something. It was almost like the feeling settled around a thing that one of the tribe's Shapers had been working on. The only difference was that it felt older and a little fainter. **(An elf did this.)** Longsong lock-sent to his lifemate. She'd most likely come to the same conclusion already, but he couldn't help saying it. There was an elf out there, a Rock-Shaper. But who? And where? **(No tracks?)** Crystals didn't just fall out of the sky and there was a fading scent of unknown elf around the spot they were standing in. There had to be something.
"There are some," she replied, nodding in the direction of the faint tracks. One-Edge half-turned toward Longsong and shrugged. She wasn't frightened, but there was a definite tinge of wariness in her mindvoice. **(Whoever it was didn't announce it's presence, and didn't answer your sending. I wonder if this was left on purpose or dropped by accident. I could probably track our guest down, but...)** She trailed off, looking out into the night again. The huntress tested the balance of her spear again, almost absentmindedly. "I'll follow these just to see what direction they lead in. I won't go further than I can still see the shelter. I doubt our visitor stays so close." One-Edge turned back to her mate, giving him a little smile and a short embrace, before she carefully started to follow the faint tracks.
LizardStalker walked after Longsong, curious as to what was going on. He then went back inside to his brother and QuickSand. He would wait for the older male to come inside before he would ask him all sorts of questions.
ChildWolf felt One-edge leaving him and curled up in a ball.
Longsong stood outside the shelter for a long moment, eyes fixed on his lifemate's back as she disappeared out onto the plains. He waited until the darkness almost had engulfed her, then went back inside to the others. He smiled as widely as he could muster, trying to reassure while he himself still felt a bit uneasy. "It appears there was nothing to be found out there. Just a shiny stone. Shall I tell you the end of the story?"
LizardStalker nodded as he looked to Longsong. "You didn't tell us who won." he told him. He knew that was where they left off and that distraction from things would be a good thing. Him being a cub still, his mind was stuck on that one part. Who won the contest....
"Very well then," Longsong replied, absentmindedly turning the crystal over in his hand. "You see..." He launched into a detailed, dramatic description of the competition between Treemender and Stronghands - partly to make it more exciting for the cubs and partly to distract himself from worrying about One-Edge. "...and when they finally reached the top, spears heavy with fish the entire tribe held their breath. For Stronghands had been the first one to reach the top of the cliffs, but Treemender had two fishes more than Stronghands!" He made a pause. "What followed was a competition of the voice - in other words, both tried to out-shout the other, explaining exactly how this turned the game in _their_ favor. The rest of the tribe slowly returned to the Holt, while Treemender and Stronghands were arguing. They didn't arrive in the Holt until the following nightfall. Needless to say there was no mentioning of fish for a good many moons."

The wolf pack moved with deft, sure steps over the windy plains. Stronglegs was in the lead, as a chief wolf should be, Dawngazer on his back. Branchwalker was riding Bluefang, that had taken up position a bit behind the others. The eight-and-one wolves strong pack had fanned out slightly to better be able to follow the scent track they'd come upon. Now it seemed they were getting close.
**I think I see something,** Dawngazer sent to her three elfin companions. **Does that look like longrunners to you?** She pointed with her spear towards a gathering of dark silhouettes against the darkening horizon.
Riv had stayed a little bit to the left of the wolfpack all the time, not wanting to get too close but not to be stuck at the back either. He was probably making considerably more noise trying to keep up, his step heavier than the wolves', but there really was nothing he could do about it. There had never been a need to run silently, so he hadn't had a chance to learn it - even though he could sneak up to prey moderately well when necessary. When Dawngazer sent, he stopped and looked to the direction she pointed. At first he didn't see anything - this would have been a lot easier in broad daylight - but slowly his eyes picked up several shapes in the distance. **Yeah,** he answered shortly. Longrunners or some other grass-eaters. The lean, long legs and no horns indicated longrunners, but he wasn't completely sure at this distance.
Dawngazer gave a short nod in reply to Riv's sending, though she wasn't sure if he could see it. **BrightStar, what do you think?** she then asked, wanting to make sure. BrightStar was after all an Elder and no doubt the one most knowledgable of the hunting party members when it came to hunting longrunners.
BrightStar was on top of Syke and saw the longrunners easily. **They are longrunners. A good herd.** he sent.
Branchwalker fisted his hands in Bluefang's fur for a moment, feeling the surge of energy go through him that he always asociated with hunting and tree-climbing. The pack was getting excited as well, the wolves shifting their weight from paw to paw or giving off soft whines.
BrighStar heard and saw the pack. Syke was just as excited. He got off and walked a few steps forward to get a better look at the herd.
In the far off distance the longrunners began to shift. They didn't start running, but they were obviously nervous.
BrightStar took careful notice of their nervousness. He was trying to read them.
Dawngazer frowned at this sudden change of behavior. The wind hadn't changed, so they couldn't have smelled the wolves and she highly doubted they could see them - longrunners weren't birds of prey after all. What by the stars had them so wary? **I think we'd better move quickly. Something's startled them, at least a little, and if we don't do anything they might run off before we're close enough to gain on them.** They hadn't seen or found tracks of any prey big enough to feed the tribe other than the longrunners. Hopefully there was other prey, but the hunt would take far longer if they had to search for new now.
BrightStar heard Dawngazer's send while he kept watching them carefully. He kept looking to the sides to see if he could detect something that would explain why the herd was acting like that. **Seems like there's something stalking, but I can't find any hint of what it is. Tyke knows to not interfere with the hunting, so she's not it. It should be easier to attack from the right. I see a few that would be easy to get over there. See the one with the black mane and brownish coat. Try and leave him be. That's their leader. We don't take leaders during a hunt.** he sent to Dawngazer. Syke kept low and beside BrighStar.
Riv swore in almost inaudible voice. Of course he was on the wrong side of the hunting party now - and couldn't get to the other side without going past the wolves. To him the order not to go after the leader was a strange one - at least it made sense to leave young ones and nursing mothers alone to allow for the next generation of prey to grow - but it didn't really matter. There was nothing spectacular in that one anyway that would make it particularly tempting catch. **Get moving then,** he sent in very impatient voice, knowing full well that if it became a chase, he'd be helplessly left behind.
SilverEyes looked to Riv and sighed inwardly. **To go now would be to leap at prey and make them run. At times one must be patient and then one's hunting will go a good ways.** she sent to him. She had no idea where those words came from but wouldn't question them. She had her weapon to use and knew that she wanted to get at least one on this hunt.
Riv just gave SilverEyes a dirty look when she looked the other way. He knew enough of hunting not to need being lectured by some...girl. Besides, he had meant sneaking up to them, not running in head-on.
Eveninglight, who'd been riding at the back of the party, cut in – hoping to stifle a possible disagreement. **Shall we sneak upon them then?** Not having been old enough to count as an adult for more than a few turns she didn't have much experience with hunting with the rest of the tribe. Before there had always been plenty of hunters and wolves to hunt the bigger prey – she'd been more than happy to hunt a solitary branch-horn with her age mates or just her bond-friend so it hadn't been a problem. Now…now things were much more serious. Yes, the hunt was still thrilling, but all hunters didn't know each other as well as they should for such a big hunt. They were all hungry, there were no stores to rely on if they failed and the territory was unknown. She bit her lip, trying to quench the overwhelming nervousness she suddenly felt.
**I think that sounds like a good idea,** Dawngazer replied. **Spread out, make sure to keep down wind and wait for a signal.** Her thoughts implicated that BrightStar should be the one to give said signal. She was no hunt leader and he was the Elder.
Branchwalker nodded in agreement, urging Bluefang to more forwards.
Riv nodded barely noticeably, more to himself than anybody else, and started moving quietly and downwind towards the herd, keeping as low as possible all the time. He also remained a sufficient distance from the wolves. One chance to throw, that was probably all he would get. And there would be no trees to take shelter in, so he had to be careful to stay out of the way once the prey started running. He had been almost stepped on - only to dodge or to be saved at the last moment - by so many big animals that it was a miracle he hadn't gotten seriously hurt even once.
BrightStar had Syke go off on her own. He trusted his bond to not interfere with their hunt as well. He looked to the others, **Shall we go?** he sent to them as he started to make his way down low. He had done many hunts with more nervous creatures than these. He kept low to the ground and travelled fast and slow at the same time. He didn't want to let these runners to get away without claiming one at least. He knew that there were cubs to feed and more adults to go with them. **As soon as everyone is in position, go in very fast. The faster we swarm them at the right time, the more prey we might be lucky to get.** he sent to them. He really didn't want to phrase it that way, but it was all he could think. Which is more than what he should've been able to think since he's focused on the hunt so much.
Dawngazer sent her silent consent to this plan. She began to guide Stronglegs to take the lead - being the pack leader the other wolves would follow him.
Branchwalker too agreed with the plan and focused his full attention on the heard of longrunners a head.

**Is this close enough?** Dawngazer open-sent, but addressed BrightStar. Any closer and the longrunners would probably be able to smell them. Hopefully the wind would turn.
A heartbeat after her question panic broke out among the longrunners. Frightened sounds filled the air as the whole herd sat off at a dead run - right towards the hunting party.
Branchwalker's hands clenched in Bluefang's fur. **What's happening? ** The scent of panic and the charging animals had him frozen in shock. **What's chasing them?**
There were other sounds as well. If one were to listen carefully, noises not unlike arrows whistling through the air could be heard; and perhaps something akin to voices crying out in ellation.
**Scatter!** Dawngazer suddenly ordered, as she realized they would all be trampled if they stayed where they were. **Try to take one of two down when they pass, but don't get in their way! They'll crush you like over-ripe dreamberries if you do.**
BrightStar didn't like what was happening at all. **Take down what you can safely.** he sent just after what Dawngazer sent. He didn't want another to become injured on this trip. He made a point to remember what he heard but couldn't think on it as it was his and other's lives at stake. He turned to take down one of them when his left arm got hit by a hoof. He heard the crack as he was certain that the others heard it too. He could careless about it and went to working on taking down a longrunner. **Riv, you have one coming towards you.** he sent to the younger one. He hoped that he would be able to take down that adult without hurting himself. He cared for all of them and wanted them all safe. He heard something behind him and quickly turned and ducked out of the way.
'Don't get in their way' was an awfully hard order to obey in Riv's current situation. He didn't have a wolf to outrun the stampeding herd and quite a few of them were heading directly for him. He managed to dodge and roll out of the way of one, but the moment he got up, BrightStar's warning reached him. But it was too late to dodge. "Drukk!" Riv swore, falling to his knees and bracing his spear against the ground. And praying that the longrunner would either run around him or jump. The animal jumped. Time seemed to slow down as Riv watched his spear pierce the soft belly, then the huge mass descending on him and ultimately crushing him against the hard ground. A flailing hoof grazed the side of his head, but it was the impact of falling that made stars twinkle in his eyes. Absurdly enough his last thought before passing out was that he was being soaked in warm liquid. It couldn't be his own blood, right?
SilverEyes heard the crack of BrightStar's arm and the word that Riv said. She was close enough to Riv but still had the longrunners between them. She quickly released her last arrow to pierce a longrunner's heart....hopefully. She then got out her daggers and jumped up on a longrunner and stabbed it deeply. She was very fierce during a hunt... something that no one would ever have thought of when they saw her. The longrunner fell down with her on top of it. It was now clear to go over to Riv. She made sure that the longrunner was dead before doing anything to help the male. She tried to lift up the beast, but found that it was a little heavier than she thought. ** (Riv, talk to me.)** she locksent to the younger hunter. She then saw all the blood. She sniffed it and could easily tell that it wasn't Riv's from her wolf-blood. She had a huge relief from knowing that.
SilverEyes could sense Riv's mind, that he was still alive, but there was no reply. Instead there was a firm wall that kept everybody out. Not like a soul name, protecting some private core, but a wall enclosing everything, keeping others from getting too close.
SilverEyes managed to move the beast off to the side to clear a way for Riv. **(Riv, for High Ones sakes, answer me!)** she half-demanded of him. She was getting really worried about him by now. She kept her eyes out for any other dangers that might come to them. She would protect him, but worried about what he would say when he came to about that.
**(Get. Out. Of my head,)** Riv snapped, only half-conscious, but painfully aware of someone else's consciousness yelling in his mind.
BrightStar watched out of the corner of his eye on what SilverEyes and Riv were doing. Before he knew it the last thing he saw was a longrunner rearing up in front of him. He was knocked unconscious by a hoof and just laid on the ground. This was something unexpected and something that he would never forget.
Dawngazer finally arrived at BrightStar's side. Having heard something very much like a bone breaking from his direction she been heading his way, but having to dodge crazed longrunners had slowed her significantly. Now he was unconscious and had to be dragged to safety, High Ones help her! Not having time to be careful Dawngazer dismounted, heaved BrightStar up on Stronglegs and jumped back up. Hopefully she hadn't made any of his injuries worse. **SilverEyes, how is Riv?** she sent while urging Stronglegs out of the longrunners' way. **Branchwalker, where are you?**
Branchwalker had been separated from the other elves by the oncoming torrent of longrunners. He'd managed to hold onto Bluefang and together with about half of the pack gotten out of the panicked herd's way. Right at that moment he had knocked an arrow onto his bow and was aiming for a longrunner heading almost right towards where Riv lay pinned, guarded by SilverEyes. **I'm here!** he answered Dawngazer and let the arrow fly. **BrightStar?** He thought he had a good view of everyone from where he was standing, everyone but… **Eveninglight? Where is Eveninglight?!**
BrightStar felt being hoisted onto a wolf. He groaned at this. Syke felt his bond being hurt and stopped his hunting and buried his kills. He then raced over to try to get to his bond. He was really worried.
**Sorry,** Dawngazer sent to BrightStar when she heard him groan, **I don't have time to be careful.** With that her sending ended, her consentration fully on helping Stronglegs avoid being knocked down by the oncoming torrent of animals. Finally the herd had passed. Three longrunners lay dead, the rest kept on fleeing. Dawngazer sighed in pure relief, bringing Stronglegs to a halt next to one of the fallen longrunners. **Is everyone well?** she open-sent, hoping to get a response from the entire party.
**I am still unharmed,** Branchwalker replied. **I can see SilverEyes and Riv from here, but Eveninglight...** Him not seeing her didn't mean she was hurt. He knew that, but the knowledge didn't make him worry any less.
BrightStar heard everything and wanted to talk to them. Syke went next to his bond. He knew that the elf would be hurting for a long while. The young fox looked to Dawngazer worriedly then to Stronglegs with the same worried look on his face. His bond wouldn't answer him but would send him an emotion of pain with the slight hint of 'I'm okay.' in it.

Sunsleaf and Bloodmane were finally on their way back to the shelter. The 'harvest' had been fair, better than Sunsleaf had dared to hope and she had a sizable bundle of basket making material for Branchwalker to work with. She had found some vines suitable for working into rope; once the outer covering was removed to reveal the long tough fibers that had been discovered when she tangled her foot in a loop. She had been rather embarassed at having to cut herself free, but the discovery of what lay within the vine had washed that away with the thrill of knowing there would be tough rope as a 'reward'. Even on the walk back she was careful to point out to Bloodmane plants of one sort or another and pause to talk of the properties, good or bad. Some were to be outright avoided, and others only dangerous if one didn't prepare them properly. She had tried to share as much of her knowledge as she could. But, there were some things she simply couldn't explain how she knew, only that she knew them with a soul deep certainty. It was her hope, that Bloodmane didn't dislike her, perhaps they could even be friends. However, for now, she was simply glad that someone was interested in what she knew of plants and their healing properties.
Bloodmane had been quiet most of the way back, trying to commit all the new information she had learned to memory. In the current situation they simply couldn't rely on Sunsleaf staying with them for any certain amount of time, so whatever she could learn in the meantime might one night be vital to their survival. Beyond that, she had rather enjoyed their little gathering expedition. Being an outsider, Sunsleaf didn't share the recent memories of the massacre of their kin, which made her an entirely different companion to talk with. It wasn't about what they talked about - mainly the plants - but rather how they talked about it, how the other elfess' whole attitude was simply...different. And, in some way, it had felt very much like learning woodlore from her father long ago.
Longsong, having finished the story, went back over to the shelter's entrance to wait for his lifemate. He couldn't decide if he was worried or not. There were no known dangers here on the flat lands - no big predators, no cliffs or trees to fall from and the river wasn't fast enough here that falling into it would mean certain drowning - yet somehow that wasn't comforting. Unknown dangers were always worse and the mysterious stone and elf scent had put him on edge. The sound of faint footsteps brought him out of his brooding. **One- Edge?**
**It's Sunsleaf and I,** Bloodmane sent back, instantly recognizing Longsong's sending voice. Then she turned somewhat worried, with a hint of disapprovement in her mind-voice, **Has One-Edge left the shelter?** By the High Ones, One-Edge had injured her leg! She wasn't in any condition to walk around.
One-Edge was on her way back to the shelter, when she recieved their open sendings. Her lip curled with a mix of irritation and amusement. It wasn't as if she'd gone far, anyway - but of course, they all had been through a lot, and it wasn't strange that Bloodmane especially would react. The other elfess couldn't know why or when One-Edge had left, anyway. The huntress straightened up, did her best not to limp, and let her entrance back into the shelter's vicinity be heralded with a sending. **I'm here. We found something and I wanted to... well, I'll explain in a bit.**
Bloodmane relaxed visibly when One-Edge sent. The last thing they needed was losing any more tribemates. She didn't smile, though. In her opinion, One-Edge had acted stupid and might have put herself in danger. Trolls - probably far behind them by now - weren't the only creatures that could kill an injured elf.
One-Edge smiled as she entered the light from the campfire, but there was a tightness around her eyes. The brown-haired elfess nodded to Bloodmane and Sunsleaf as she moved over to Longsong and gave him a tight embrace. She smiled, lips close to his ear, and breathed: "Your second story tonight, love... or shall I?"
Longsong gratefully returned One-Edge's embrace, relieved that she was safe. "I think this one's all yours. I've told enough tales for one night." He wanted to ask her about her leg, but Bloodmane looked upset enough as it was. If he started to worry as well he'd most likely only annoy them both.
Bloodmane didn't say anything before following the lifemates inside the shelter. Something had clearly happened while they had been gone but apparently there was no imminent danger.
One-Edge sat down, took a sip of water from her waterskin, and waited for the returning gatherers to make themselves comfortable before she or Longsong began their story in earnest. "Yes, things have been interesting back here... but first, what of you? Did you see anything interesting when you were out?" Glancing at Longsong, she added: "Signs of others, perhaps?"
Bloodmane had already started sorting the plants they had collected earlier, but stopped at One-Edge's question. "Others? No, nothing like that. Did something happen here that indicates other elves?" Her heart beat a little faster at the thought. Finding a whole tribe of friendly elves would mean safety, stability, and perhaps even help in rescuing their captured tribemates. Even though it was already too late for everybody she had called family.
*Others?* Longsong thought to himself, but didn't utter anything out loud, not wanting to interrupt. Instead he silently sat down between One-Edge and LizardStalker, waiting for an explanation.
ChildWolf woke up from his small nap and looked to see that the others came back. He just stared at them blankly.
**Feeling better?** Longsong sent quietly to ChildWolf, mindful of the other elf's headache.
ChildWolf barely nodded as he didn't want to move all that much. He looked to Longsong with a curiosity in his eyes. He hoped that the older male could understand him.
LizardStalker looked from Longsong over to the two females and then over to One-Edge. He looked to them curiously, wondering what they had found. Sprinter came over to him and laid her head on his leg.
Longsong reached out and began to scratch Sprinter behind an ear. She looked so satisfied resting her head on her bond like that, that he couldn't help himself. Though One-Edge's tale still had his full attention.
Sprinter let her tongue hang out. She was enjoying all this attention. LizardStalker leaned on Longsong happily. He hoped that the other story was just as good. He really loved them.
Bloodmane didn't say anything before following the lifemates inside the shelter. Something had clearly happened while they had been gone but apparently there was no imminent danger.
One-Edge nodded. She glanced toward the shelter's door. "Not long before you came back, we heard something outside. Found this... Love, you have it, right?" She nudged Longsong with her elbow, gesturing for him to show the others the strange jewellery they'd found. One-Edge pointed at it. "It's been shaped. We're pretty sure of it. That's why I was gone, I tried to follow the tracks from whomever dropped it."
Letting her gaze leave One-Edge, Bloodmane studied the stone for a while, but it looked just like an ordinary stone to her. There was still very, very faint feeling that it wasn't, but she couldn't sense anything beyond that. If her mother had still been alive and with them, she could have told what exactly had been done to that thing. She always could feel it when magic had been used with startling accuracy.
Noting Bloodmane's disapproving look, the huntress added "I made sure I didn't go further from the shelter than I could still see it. Didn't help though. The tracks... they disappeared." She shrugged, but her brow furrowed with thought. One-Edge didn't particulary enjoy it when her prey got away, no matter what kind it was. She shook her head in disbelief. "The strangest thing... They were there, plain as the snout on a tuskpig's face, and then they were just gone. Soft earth in all directions. I headed back immediately, and then you had arrived. That's why I wondered. There seems to be at least one elf out there, somewhere... though I wonder why he didn't show himself."
"Wary of us perhaps. Or just didn't like what he saw. Maybe he thought we were carrying too much trouble along with us and wanted no part?" Sunsleaf was sorting and bundling herbs as she spoke. Many of the herbs would need to hang and dry, but some she would set aside and perhaps later offer to show Bloodmane some of her preparations. "Any word from the hunters?" She was curious, it would be the first time they weren't living lean if they succeeded in a good hunt.
"None yet," Longsong answered Sunsleaf, happy for a distraction from the uncomfortbale topic of conversation. Disappearing elves made no sense and the knowledge that One-Edge had been out there, alone with High Ones only know what kind of creature... "I would attempt a sending, but I wouldn't want to distract them in the middle of something important." On the other hand, someone should warn them about the strange tracks. "I think I'll give them a little longer. If they haven't said anything soon I'll try and send to them."
Sunsleaf nodded to the response trying not to think too much on the possibilities. After all, perhaps in this strange area it was taking longer to find prey.
"How old were those tracks?" Bloodmane asked. Could it have been possible that whoever left them...had flown away? In such an open place jumping was not something you just disappear with, but flying...Although if it had been a bird that carried the elf away - she knew from the stories that some elves could bond with birds - it was one huge bird. And if the tracks had been fresh, One-Edge should have seen it.
Longsong shrugged and looked to his lifemate for an answer.
ClearIce came back to the holt with Prongs carrying all of what he caught. It wasn't the best catch he ever had, but it was enough to last them a few eights of days. He had heard something. **I'm back. Anyone want to help clean them?** he sent as he was closer to the shelter. He had his blowgun next to his chest, ready to use if necessary.
ChildWolf whimpered when he heard the sendings. He curled up while holding his head. He hated the fact that it hurt his head and when his head hurt his whole body hurt. LizardStalker heard this and went over to his brother. "Help him?" he asked the others.
Sunsleaf stopped tending the herbs and rose to move over to ChildWolf's side. Kneeling down she reached out to gently stroke his hair and she whispered, "Shhhh. I need you to lay quiet so I can see if I can tell what has not healed. Perhaps there is something more I can do."
Bloodmane looked at ChildWolf with worried eyes. Her feelings hadn't completely vanished, even though she had acted like they had on more than one occasion lately. And it hurt to see one of her tribemates in pain. "Sunsleaf is doing everything she can. Come over here and help me with these herbs. Or help ClearIce with his catch," she told Lizardstalker. That way, the cub would be out of the herbal healer's way and would also have something else to think about.
"Yes, help Bloodmane," Longsong encouraged LizardStalker, giving ChildWolf's whimpering form a worried glance. "Sunsleaf needs room to work."
Sunsleaf spared a smile for Bloodmane and Longsong as they dealt with the younger elf. Her attention returning to ChildWolf as she continued to inspect his form as best she could. Was that a lump she felt on his scalp or just the normal shape of his head? Some had lumpier heads than others and she was not yet familiar with all of these elves.
ChildWolf yelped when she touched the sensitiveness of his head. He tried to back away from her, especially if she was going to keep touching where he hated being touch. It hurt and he darn well isn't going to let anybody else touch it, not even himself.
LizardStalker nodded and went over to Bloodmane. He looked up to her, asking if she would tell him what he needed to do now. He knew that his brother was in good hands now. Especially if Longsong trusted this elf with his brother. He trusted the lorekeeper's opinions and all.
"We need to separate the different plants from each other," Bloodmane told softly to Lizardstalker. "Once Sunsleaf has seen to your brother, she'll tell us how to prepare them for medicine." She didn't speak very loud to avoid bringing any more discomfort to ChildWolf, but her tone was also softer than could be said for most times during their forced journey.
LizardStalker looked to the different plants, "They smell different too." he said in his usual innocent way. He didn't like all of the smells together, but knew that he could help and separate them. Sprinter stayed over next to Longsong was, now putting her head on his leg.
"That's right," Bloodmane said, "Appearance and scent are the main factors how to tell plants apart from each other. Taste comes last, because some plants are deadly."
QuickSand gave LizardStalker and almost annoyed look. "We don't have any trees here," she stated, mostly pointing out the obvious rather than actually thinking LizardStalker had seen trees on the plains. She gave the task Bloodmane offered LizardStalker a doubting look. "That seems booooring. Can't we go out looking for the stranger instead?"
No, you can't." Bloodmane frowned. "You're staying inside until the hunters return." She would never let cubs outside alone with a possible danger waiting there. Right now, she was feeling hopeful about this stranger, but it never hurt to be careful.
LizardStalker looked to QuickSand, "Oh." he said looking a bit disappointed. He then heard her say it seemed boring, "Not it isn't. This is 'portant." he said back to her. "'Sides, I don't wanna go look for a stranger. I don't wanna leave my brother again." he said softly, but loud enough for Bloodmane and QuickSand to hear.
Sprinter, LizardStalker's bond, went outside with One-Edge and watched them clean and gut the fish. She hoped that she could get a treat or two out of them. It worked in the past, so why won't it work now...
QuickSand, who'd for once been sitting quietly in a corncer, too overwhelmed to say anything, joined LizardStalker next to Bloodmane. Magical stones, disappearing elves; it was all both exciting and frightenting (though she'd never admit the last feeling out loud). She gave poor ChildWolf a quick glance, then focused her attention on his brother. "How do you think the stranger disappeared?" she whispered-asked LizardStalker. It felt like a question that should be spoken in a hushed tone of voice. Made it sound even more interesting.
LizardStalker looked to her, "I don't know. The only way I know how a person disappears is jumping up in a tree." he replied in the same whispered way.
Bloodmane looked briefly up as Quicksand joined them, then concentrated on the plants again. Let the cubs come up with their own theories if they wanted to. At least it gave them something to do.
ClearIce pulled the two satchels of fish. He had a small sack of the mud-diggers. He had tried one of these before a loved them. He went inside to see the others and saw how ChildWolf was. "I have a few mud- diggers. They are a very rare delicacy from where I'm from. Wanna come try one?" he asked the youngling. "I could also use help in cleaning the fish. There's a lot."
One-Edge answered Clearice with a light mind-touch. She stood up and grabbed what she'd need to gut and clean the prey. **I'll come right out.** Turning to Bloodmane, she frowned and shrugged again. "I'd say whoever it was spent some time sitting still and listening to us. Then after we heard the sound and went out, he or she fled quickly. The tracks were as fresh as I could find them. I did a search around the place where they disappeared, and found nothing. It wasn't a jump, they were too soft for that. No tree nearby. Just... gone." The huntress shook her head, puzzled but not frightened. There were no reason to be afraid of an elf, anyway. Leaning forward, she nuzzled Longsong's cheek and hair before turning to leave the shelter and help Clearice.
ClearIce smiled to himself when he felt her mind-touch and heard her send. He already undid one of the sacks and started to gut the fish. He left them in a pile to clean later. **I've already gutted those.** he sent to One-Edge. Prongs had gone to grazing nearby, keeping an eye and ear out for possible danger.
Longsong squeezed One-Edge's shoulder when she nuzzled him. He gave her injured leg another worried glance, but still said nothing. Nagging never lead to anything else than irritation. "I think I shall try and contact the hunters," he stated to his tribemates in general. ~**Any luck with finding prey?**~ he lock-sent, reaching as far as he could with his mind. Trolls couldn't send, but if there was a stranger... He'd never heard of hostile elf tribes, but there had been crazy ones, even in his own Holt's history. One elf alone was no real danger, but many, mad ones was as frightening as it was unlikely. Sadly unlikely things seldom stopped being frightening only because they probably wouldn't happen.

Finally all the longrunners had passed, leaving the wolf pack, the hunting party and three of their fallen kin behind.
**Thank the High Ones that's over!** Dawngazer open-sent, taking her gaze off BrightStar for a moment. Now that she no longer was surrounded my fleeing longrunners she could actually see beyond the tips of her nose. And what she saw surprised her beyond words.
**That was our prey! Who are you?** came a sudden sending from a female standing in the center of a group of elves – perhaps two eights of them – not . She didn't look pleased to see them, at all.
~**D-does any of you know them?**~ Branchwalker lock-sent, the stampede and this sudden, none too friendly meeting making more than a little jumpy.
BrightStar sat up slowly while cradling his arm. **I am an Elder of Frozen Lands. Who you?** he sent with pain to her. He figured on giving something that was easy enough to check if needed and something that was very vague. He really didn't like telling anything to a complete stranger, at least not one like this one. The ones he was with right now were different. He liked them right off. He heard Branchwalker's locksend, ~**I'm not sure.**~ was all he could respond back before falling back to the ground in a wave of dizzyness and nausea.
The female in the strange group's mids gave BrightStar a suspicious look. She paused, as if considering if he was worthy of an answer, then sent: **I am Claw, Hunt Leader and soon to be Chieftess of the Branch of Sundown.** The pride in her mind voice was subdued, but obvious. **We are the Children of the Oaks and this kill was ours.** Her eyes flashed with hostility, not unlike a wolf with it's hackles raised.**Calm yourself sister,** one of the other strangers suddenly interrupted. He took a step forwards, hands raised in a friendly, nonthreatening gesture. **I am Dusk. We apologize-**
**We do no such thing!**
Dusk gave Claw an almost angry glare. **..._apologize_ for putting your hunters in danger by startling the herd. We did not know you were hunting her as well.** He gave his sister another silencing glare. They seemned to lock in a silent battle of wills, broken only by BrightStar's fall.
"BrightStar!" Branchwalker cried out, for the moment forgetting about the strange elves. Followed by those of the wolves that hadn't been assisting their bond-friends he hurried over to the fallen elf, who Dawngazer just had been able to catch. **BrightStar, how badly are you hurt?** Branchwalker sent, putting a shaking hand on the other's forehead. "We have to get him back to the shelter. Sunsleaf might be able to do something." He already thought of her as the tribe's Herbal Healer.
BrightStar moaned softly. His arm was hurting him along with his chest and ribs. He didn't think he was that badly hurt, but then again...
Dawngazer nodded and stood up. Giving the strangers another suspicious look she surveyed the surroundings once more, knowing Branchwalker would take good care of BrightStar. Eveninglight was still nowhere to be seen. **Eveninglight?! Eveninglight where are you?!** she sent, as loud as she could. If she wasn't too badly hurt (or worse) she should reply soon.
Meanwhile Claw gave Dusk another dirty glare, but seemed to have given up the idea of solitary claim to the prey. **I have a suggestion,** she sent, still clearly annoyed - the fact that none of the strangers had given their names yet only feeding that fire. **We'll help you with your wounded and with carrying the meat, if we get two of the longrunners.**
**That's no fair trade,** an elf with blond hair, that stood on the opposite side of Claw as Dusk, sent.
**You too Skyflare?** This time Claw sounded more shocked than truly angry.
Skyflare only grinned in reply. "Here, let me help you," he then said and walked over to kneel by Branchwalker. He gave the wolves - who kept a respectful distance from all the new elves, confused by the sudden appearance of so many unknown not-bonds - a curious, but also wary look. **BrightStar is it?** he sent, he too attempting to rose the fallen elf.
BrightStar just barely opened his eyes to look at them. Syke went over to his bond and gave a fox version of a whine. He had seen that the elf didn't harm his bond, so he trusted him... for now.
Branchwalker sighed in relief when BrightStar moved. He was hurt, yes, but still alive. Hopefully he would stay that way. Longsong's sending came as a bit of a surprise. The chaos of the hunt had distracted him completely from how long they must have been gone. ~**We have food and...more**~ he lock-sent, including the entire tribe in it. He added an image of the strange elves and the injured ones. ~**We can't find Eveninglight.**~ No point in trying to keep that hidden - the worry in his mind voice would have been enough.
Skyflare didn't notice Branchwalker start - he was too busy trying to decide if he should try and shove the oddly large, white fox away from BrightStar. The one helping him (no name given yet) didn't seem the least bothered and no one from the strange hunting party said anything, so he let it be. Still it was unnerving to see the large predator standing so close to an injured elf. "Will you join us in our camp? It's not far from here, just behind those hills." He pointed out the direction. The hills hiding it weren't really hills by Tall Tree Holt standards, but still high enough to keep whatever was behind them hidden.
Claw gave Skyflare a dark glare, but said nothing. In fact, she'd already begun to organize the carrying of one of the dead longrunners - grumpily and with short, harsh orders, but still.
Riv was slowly regaining consciousness, the sendings all around him just making his already throbbing head feel like it was being pounded by several troll hammers. "Shut up already..." he muttered, although not loud enough that anyone else than SilverEyes (who was next to him) would have heard. One by one he started picking up various messages other than pain from his senses. Weight keeping his body pinned to the ground from chest down. Being soaked in something sticky. Blood. Even his nose could tell from the overwhelming smell. A warm hand on his shoulder. Finally he opened his eyes, and fixed his gaze on SilverEyes after briefly noticing that it was one of the longrunners that had pinned him down. Apparently his desperate last-moment move had been a success - the animal was dead. "Get this thing off me," he snapped. It sounded more like an order than a request. But then again, Riv never asked nicely for anything if he could avoid it.
"Oh, be quiet you," Dawngazer replied to Riv, knowing fully well that the demand hadn't been directed at her. She did however walk over to help him get free from the dead longrunner.
Riv had just been about so snap something back, but when she came over to help him, he swallowed it.
A few of the unknown hunters came forth to help. None of them dared look their Hunter Leader in the eye, except Skyflare and Dusk.
With several elves pushing and pulling on the longrunner, Riv managed to crawl away from under it and even pull free his spear (that had embedded itself quite deep in the animal's flesh). "Thanks," he said shortly, dusting off his clothes - not that it helped much, as he still was covered in longrunner blood. To him, meeting these strangers was nothing special after meeting the Tall Tree Holt tribe. It was, after all, his second encounter with new elves in unknown territory...no, make that third, counting BrightStar and ClearIce.
"No worries," one of the strangers replied, giving Riv's spear a brief, wary glance.
"What are those?" one of them finally asked, as Riv was free from the longrunner. She indicated the wolves and Syke. "They're obviously not prey, but they haven't tried to steal the meat yet. Why aren't they doing something?"
SilverEyes saw everything going on and just stood there like an idiot. She went over towards the others slightly. "Those are our bonded and non-bonded. They won't do anything to the kills." she explains.
The strangers only gave SilverEyes blank looks. Obviously 'bonded' meant nothing to them.
Dawngazer sighed. What kind of elves were these to never have heard of a bond? Purebloods obviously and not well traveled ones. Not that her tribe was much better when it came to moving about, but wanderers had to come by now and again, surely? "We will explain later. Could you please help find our lost tribemate? Her name is Eveninglight. She was with us when the hunt began."
The strangers who weren't busy following Claw's orders of lifting one of the longrunners onto a big, flat piece of wood, fanned out and began looking. It didn't take them long to find something.
"Over here!" one of them cried out, over by the dead longrunner no one had had time to take care of yet. "Under." The longrunner was swiftly moved aside to reveil a deep hole right under it. Luck had been on the elves side - the longrunner had fallen in such a way that it had covered the hole without falling into it. Had it done so, the hole's current occupant would have been crushed.
*Oh High Ones,* was Dawngazer's first thought as she peeked over the edge of the pit. Eveninglight was lying at the bottom, unmoving. She smelled blood in the air. "We have to get her back to the shelter."
"Once more we have to apologize," Dusk said, voice still very calm. "It was meant as a trap for the longrunners, not a fellow elf. There are steps to climb on, I'll show-"
Dawngazer interrupted him by jumping right into the hole, too impatient to try and find the steps in the dark. She halted her fall by bouncing from wall to wall until she'd reached the ground, just as Branchwalker had taught her. The difference between doing so into a hole and down from two trees wasn't that big.
The Children of the Oaks that had gathered around the pit watched the mad leap with wide eyes.
**I'll need help getting her out of here,** Dawngazer sent up to the others. She knelt by Eveninglight's side, feeling for a pulse. There was one, thankfully beating strong. There wasn't much blood either. Possibly a broken bone or two, a light head injury, nothing more. A lucky fall. ~**Eveninglight? Eveninglight, please answer me.**~
A vauge, pained thought replied.
*No permanent damage,* Dawngazer thought, not sure if she was trying to convince herself or just stating a fact. A rope, followed by two of the Children of the Oaks, distracted her from sending to Eveninglight.
It didn't take long to get out of the trap. Well above ground Dawngazer attemtped to arrange Evenightlight as comfortable as she could on Stronglegs' back.
Eveninglight was vaugely aware of being lifted and she breathed in sharply, the motion of her chest rising causing pain to fill her senses. She opened her eyes and felt like everything was rocking back and forth; her head hurt. What had happened? She remembered pursuing a longrunner but then a moment's hesitation had led to another of the creatures running directly into her. She remembered the collision, but that was it. She looked straight up at the sky, not wanting to move her aching head.
Branchwalker was more than relieved when Dawngazer sent about Eveninglight. She didn't sound too worried, good. ~**Wait,**~ he hurried to send to the shelter, ~**We've found Eveninglight. She's hurt, but alive. So is BrightStar. I think they both have broken bones and perhaps have been hit in the head, but nothing more serious.**~ This last information was of course directed at Sunsleaf. ~**There are new elves here as well. They seem friendly and will hopefully help us carry the longrunners back. We'll hurry.**~ To Skyflare he said: "That is not for me to decide. Our wounded need tending. You...don't have any healers with you, do you?"
Skyflare seemed surprised by this question. He didn't say anything though, just gave a helpless shrug.
Claw, who'd been listening in on the conversation, on the other hand, flushed red and gritted her teeth audiably."What do you take us for No-Name?!" she hissed, narrowing her eyes to firey slits. "Bringing healers on a hunt? We have more honor than that!"
Branchwalker's eyes widened in obvious confusion and a little bit fear. How had he insulted them?
Dawngazer stepped between Claw and her poor soul brother, returning the Hunt Leader's dark look with one of her own. "Lower your voice!" she barked. "You're worse than a wolf with a burr in its tail! Either spit out what's gnawing you or act like a leader should." A Hunt Leader that only snarled and growled wasn't much of a Hunt Leader at all.
Claw seemed a bit taken a-back by this sudden outburst from someone else than herself. She took a step back, almost looking embarrassed.
"We need to get our wounded back to our shelter. Will you help us?" Dawngazer asked, then realized she hadn't introduced herself. "I am Dawngazer," she hurried to add. "And 'No-Name' over there is my soul brother Branchwalker."
Claw relaxed a little after the names had been uttered. At least now there was some common ground. "We will help you," she said, descretely signaling for the hunters carrying one of the longrunners to turn around so they were facing away from their camp. "We shall go with you to your shelter at once."
"But," Dusk suddenly interrupted, "should we not go back and bring the others with us?"
Claw gave her brother a sideways glance. Her left eye twitched. "He's not that important."
Dusk's eyes narrowed.
Claw grumbled for a long moment. Finally she gave an irritated huff and gestured with one of her hands towards half of the hunting party. "Fine. We'll go back to the camp. You others, follow the strangers to their shelter. Help them carry the longrunners."

Longsong went back to petting Sprinter, waiting impatiently for a reply from the hunting party. When Branchwalker's sending reached him - and the rest of the elves in the shelter - he felt his heart skip a beat. Eveninglight gone? No, no, no! No more lost ones, they wouldn't, couldn't last like this, live like this... Luckily no grief had time to set in before the second sending calmed him. So she was alive. And so was BrightStar, thank the High Ones. Broken bones could be mended without magic, it would just take time. ~**Return safetly!**~
QuickSand's eyes widened in wonder at the mental image of the new elves. So many strangers! "Do you think it was one of them outside?" she asked the grown-ups in general, a torrent of glee and questions building up. "They have funny hair! Do you think they could make my hair look like that? Do they have any bond-friends do you think? More pronghorns?" She was alight with cubbish joy, too distracted to really reflect over BrightStar and Eveninglight's injuries. Perhaps she was getting a little too used to seeing others hurt...
As she heard Branchwalker's sending that Eveninglight was missing, Bloodmane's fists clenched so hard that her nails drew tiny trails of blood on her palms. NO! Not again! Not another one...They had already lost enough...Not when they should have finally been safe from the trolls. When he sent again, she visibly relaxed. Broken bones just meant they wouldn't be moving anywhere in the near future, but at least they hadn't lost anyone yet. Also the knowledge that the strangers were friendly was welcome news. "Probably," she then answered Quicksand's question - at least first of them. Then, to Sunsleaf, **(I will fetch some wood for splints.)** The herbs could wait a little. Injured tribemates came first.
Sunsleaf looked from her tending to ChildWolf and nodded to Bloodmane, **( Be careful. Friendly doesn't always show the truth. )**
Bloodmane stopped at the warning, then nodded. **(I will.)** She was right, of course. Just because Branchwalker believed them to be friendly didn't instantly make their intentions good, even though for a moment she would have believed him without question. But, on the other hand, the same applied to Sunsleaf and she really didn't want to believe that the herbal healer would have ill intentions.
Then Sunsleaf set about making a strong tea with what few dried herbs she had left for ChildWolf's head injury. It wasn't much but it should offer him some comfort and could reduce any swelling that might be hidden under the bone. She included a bit of herb for cleansing the blood of toxins and prepared to steep the mix of herbs in heated water. She decided she would make enough that it could be put in a skin and offered cooled as needed. But that meant the last of those herbs were used up from her previous supply. Fortunately most of them would be replaced with the fresh herbs she and Bloodmane had brought back to the shelter. Sunsleaf watched Bloodmane, she liked the other red-head and for the most part she liked almost everyone in the small group. That Riv fellow just sat wrong with her, but that was his way about the wolves. It just didn't make sense to her for him to travel with Wolf-bonded and not be comfortable about the wolves. As the tea finished the poured a bit into a small bowl and moved back over to ChildWolf, "You need to drink this. It won't taste very good, but I have a few berries left you can have when you finish this." She was worried about him, even if she wouldn't admit it to anyone else just at the moment. She didn't know if there was anything more she could do for him than to treat the symptoms and hope.
They had seen a few willows near the river, so that was where she would head. Willow wasn't the best possible tree for supporting broken bones, but they didn't have that many alternatives. The bones of the prey animals, of course, but Bloodmane wasn't sure if they had any tools to work with those. With a faint smile she turned to the cub who had just wanted to leave the shelter. "You'll see them eventually. In the meantime, do you want to come with me to get some wood? It should be safe now, since we know these strangers are friendly."
ChildWolf whined at the sending. LizardStalker turned to his brother, but stayed where he was. He knew that he was safe.... he wasn't too sure, but he trusted Longsong. Once he saw the image of the strangers, he grabbed onto Bloodmane's leg and held onto her. He didn't want to see anymore new ones.
Bloodmane had just stood up and was asking Quicksand if she wanted to come along, when Lizardstalker suddenly grabbed her leg. She startled slightly, her eyes instantly hardening and her lips twisting into a snarl, before realizing it was just a cub. No danger here. "What is it?" she asked Lizardstalker, trying to pry him away from her. "Don't surprise me like that."
LizardStalker looked up to her, "I dun wanna see any strangers." he said. He then caught her other sentence, "I sorry." he whispered to her. He quickly let her go and ran over to where his bond, Sprinter, and Longsong were. He was taking this a little hard.
"Hey, wait..." Bloodmane reached after the cub as he ran outside, then followed with a sigh. "I'm not angry. You just startled me," she said the moment she was outside too. "But you can't avoid them here for long."
LizardStalker didn't look at her, "I dun like it. Bring bad memories." he mumbled to whoever listened. He sniffled some as tears were about to fall. Sprinter whined as she nosed her elf-friend. She could feel his sadness and pain and wanted to help him.
Bloodmane laid a hand on top of LizardStalker's head. "I know." Well, she didn't quite know how seeing strangers would bring back bad memories, but she did understand what the cub meant. But even though he didn't like it, he couldn't be left outside alone.
QuickSand, distracted by LizardStalker's sudden frightened behavior, forgot to answer Bloodmane's question. Instead she stood close by to her friend, waiting for him to calm down.
At that very moment, Cloudbird happened to be in the area, and upon seeing what was going on, a look of concern passed over her face. She ran over to LizardStalker, Bloodmane, and Sprinter, hoping to see if she could help out at all.
Longsong, his attention also on LizardStalker, didn't notice Cloudbird approaching until her scent caught on the wind and blew his way. Startled and unsure if his nose wasn't playing tricks on him, he looked up and spotted his no-longer-missing tribe mate coming running towards them. **Cloudbird!** he sent, joy and relief prominent in his mind voice. **By the great trees, you're alive!** He got to his feet in a heartbeat and hurried to meet her, arms open, preparing to embrace her as soon as she got close enough. **Everyone! Cloudbird is back!**
Bloodmane smiled as she saw Cloudbird. Apparently their group hadn't been the only one to make their escape to the flatlands. **My eyes see with joy, Cloudbird,** she sent, then started steering LizardStalker - and QuickSand, who had clearly decided to stay by his side - towards the river. "Let's go. You can avoid the strangers at least a little while longer if you come with me." The cub's feelings weren't her first priority, though, but the splints.
QuickSand snuck between Longsong and Cloudbird and gave the returnee a swift hug, overjoyed to see another familiar face alive and well. Before following Bloodmane she lock-sent: ~**Did…h-have you see Redstreak or mother?**~ There was hope in her mind voice, but not much of it.

The walk to the Children of the Oak's camp wasn't too long and was mostly spent in tense silence.
Dawngazer stopped dead in her tracks when they finally passed the last hill. There, on one of the furs in the circle shaped camp, leisurely nibbling on some kind of a fruit, sat... "You!" Perhaps not the most friendly greeting, but it was all she could accomplish at the moment.
Riv had been walking at the back of the group, perhaps falling a bit behind, too. The bruises didn't bother him much, actually much less than the way he was starting to smell as sweat mixed with the longrunner blood on him. The only thing slowing him down was the joint between his right leg and hip. It was probably slightly dislocated, not enough to be real trouble, but enough to be a bother. But he absolutely refused to admit he'd be hurt enough that he'd need to go back to the shelter. Besides, he was somewhat curious of these 'Children of the Oak', had even briefly considered joining them - but on the other hand, the wolfriders owed him, which did make his standing a bit more secure in a land where you couldn't survive alone. And Riv had never been very good in taking orders, an essential trait when trying to become a part of a new tribe. He was still just behind the hill when Dawngazer stopped and called out. 'You'? "What's happening?" he asked, hurrying to her side - the latter action causing him to wince slightly. He definately wouldn't be running tonight.
Dawngazer, still somewhat in shock, didn't acknowledge Riv's question for a good long moment. **I won't believe this,** she sent finally, leaving it up to Riv to find out just what 'this' was.
The Children of the Oaks that had arrived in the camp ahead of them were giving Dawngazer curious looks. They'd gathered in a semi-circle around the elf currently holding her attention, all pretending that they only were packing up the camp, while eagerly listening for an explanation.
Rising his body elegantly from a soft fur, an elf with long blond hair half-sat observing the first arrivals to the camp. “Dusk my valiant friend!” he called out, completely ignoring said elf’s sister Claw standing even closer, “Strike me with skyfire! I suppose you must be the oh-so-mighty – yet mysteriously silent! – hunter who has managed to catch so many of these fine killings?”
Dusk didn't answer, only smile somewhat smugly, arms crossed over his chest in a relaxed manner.
Claw on the other hand gritted her teeth and gave Eclipse a dark glare. Still she somehow managed to get a hold of herself and turned her back to the annoying elf. Instead she concentrated on overseeing the gathering of their belongings.
Finished with his praising the blond elf even clapped his hands together in Dusk’s general direction, bowing his head slightly. Taking time to push his hair back and to pop some fruit into his mouth, he came to an abrupt stop in his doings as a familiar voice called out; “You!” He looked shocked for a moment – then he turned around, smile exchanged for a scowl. “Well, paint me purple and call me a dreamberry… If it isn’t my old tribemate the loud-howling she-wolf and…” he strained his neck to look beyond her, “And the foolish cub following behind her. Oh well, there goes what could have been a pleasant night…” Eclipse was not happy.
At first Riv could only stare. Then he pressed his fingernails to his palms just to be sure. It felt real enough, so this probably wasn't another stupid dream. But if it wasn't, it made even less sense. It had been days, Eclipse had gotten separated from them when trolls attacked, he had been wounded _and_ didn't strike Riv as someone who could survive alone in the wilderness. Taking a few quick steps closer (completely ignoring the fact that it hurt), he couldn't help but ask, "How are you still alive?!" He was surprised enough not to even react to being called a cub again.
Unwillingly shrinking, Eclipse could not deny that he was taken aback by Riv’s reaction to seeing him. He wasn’t prepared for that sort of behaviour and had honestly expected the both of them to instantly lash out at him for insulting them. Catching himself wavering, Eclipse found words to answer Riv’s question; “Hah! Barely! I wouldn’t be alive if it weren’t for them,” he made a sweeping gesture towards the other tribe, before sulkily crossing his arms over his drawn up legs, “Not that I unquestionably couldn’t have survived on my own.” Even he didn’t believe that, and the exclamation hung in the air, but after the honesty of Riv’s question had sunk in he’d felt that he should be slightly insulted by how awed Riv had sounded at seeing him alive. "Not surprisingly I see you've managed to get yourself all dirty and injured. I hope for the sake of your sanity that you've realized one shouldn't go around waving bruised limbs like that," Eclipse added, eying the younger elf's appearance with equal bits distaste and apprehension, "You might get some icky blood on me for an instance."
At first, Riv wasn't sure if he should be relieved...or hit Eclipse. But when the wolfrider - well, at least he thought Eclipse was a wolfrider - started talking to him like he were an idiot, any traces of thought that he might have been happy to see him alive simply disappeared. "I don't need to hear that from you!" Riv twirled around and started rushing away so quickly that he collided with one of the elves staying near them to see what would happen...and fell - only to bump into Eclipse next.
Dawngazer was dumbstruck by Eclipse's harsh lashing out at them. What in the name of the Half-Wolf had gotten into him? And how had he ended up out here, with these strangers?
Dusk gave a startled sound as Riv bumped into him. He'd been standing as if entranced by Riv's and Eclipse's argument, but shook off his fascinated facial expression quickly. He didn't say anything to Riv, only raised an eyebrow and tilted his head a little to the left.
Claw, who looked surprisingly calm for a change (though no more cheerful), took a few steps to the right so she was standing next to Dawngazer. "So he's one of yours. I should have known." The commented was made in a perfectly ordinary tone of voice, but there was something in it that left the listener feeling accused of something.
Dawngazer only gave her a glare, too distracted by Eclipse to reply (yet). "What's that supposed to mean you ungrateful pup!" she bellowed, fangs bared. "And I who was almost relieved to see you alive and well – no doubt you've had these poor unfortunates spoil you rotten, lazy bones! How did you end up here of all places?"
Eclipse squeaked as the Riv's body bumped into his - it being covered in un-describably icky -- well, he'd call it 'stuff', not wanting to think about what that actually was. That uncouth elf had no sense of how one should behave! Grudgingly Eclipse had to admit that he also was hurt, so when Dawngazer lashed out at him, he contented himself with handling the Riv 'situation' by pushing said elf down to sit on the ground, using as little of his fingers as he had to and trying not to touch any part of the shoulders covered in - well, 'stuff'. Pursing his lips in slight disgust Eclipse demonstratively wiped his hands with some leaves, hoping the hopeless elf would take the hint, before turning to Dawngazer, posture proud. He decided to ignore her last comment of him being spoiled.
Riv's eartips turned red when Eclipse pushed him aside. He wasn't usually this clumsy. It was probably just because he was feeling...well, frustrated. Or angry, maybe.
"Well - after you" Eclipse emphasised the 'you', his face being the perfect mask of suffering, "After you cruelly left me behind at the attack of the trolls I had to try to make it on my own. I fled and hid. I run for a long time actually and I have to tell you, my hair looked terrible! Having lived on roots and berries I found myself at the edge of exhaustion- and then!" he paused dramatically, "Well - then these heroic souls found me in such a sad state, or don't you agree Dusk?" Smiling innocently he walked up to Dusk and pushed the elf's hair back , letting his arm rest on his shoulder. "They practically had to bring me back from the banks of death itself." By saying 'they' it was to all observers clear to the point of general embarrassment that he was indicating Dusk especially, while his back was turned to Claw.
Dusk looked even smugger at Eclipse' comment about his - according to Eclipse - brave resucing of said elf.
Claw looked stuck inbetween the urge to hit Eclipse with something heavy, glaring holes in her brother's head and saying something mocking to Dawngazer regaring her being tribemate to such a walking insult. In the end she just stood quiet, gritting her teeth.
Dawngazer gritted her teeth as well, though louder. With another growl of frustration she fixed Eclipse with an angry stare. "Listen to me and listen well *cub*! We were are just as injured, exhausted and hungry when the trolls attacked that second time. How is it in any way our fault that you ran off in the wrong direction? You're not the only one we lost track of either! As much chaos as that was we're lucky not all of us were left wandering the woods alone! And don't think we did not search for you as soon as we were safe."
Eclipse pursed his lips and looked away, but did not look bashful in the least for his harsh words earlier.
They had in fact searched for others - but both the forest and the risk of being attacked a third time were of equale size. Dawngazer didn't feel up to explaining this to the walking ego. "Now we should head back to the others. Unless you have more cubbish whining to do? Or do you miss trees so much that you have to climb on that poor elf?" She nodded in Dusk's general direction.
Eclipse snuggled closer to his new friend, sticking out his tongue at Dawngazer in response. Not feeling up to hearing about any other losses Eclipse did not ask Dawngazer about what had happened since he had last seen them. And even though he realized that his accusations earlier might not be true he couldn't help but wondering if they had given his disappearance much thought. So many had been lost who meant so much more to most of those who were still alive. That thought left him feeling vaguely and familiarly expendable.
At this point Riv decided it was best not to say anything at all. Instead he started surveying the camp and the strange elves there, noting in passing (and with some pleasure) that he had gotten some mud and dried blood on Eclipse when they collided. Served him just right.
Claw's expression of mixed emotions suddenly transformed into something you almost could call a smile. She gave Dawngazer a look that nearly could be called friendly.
Dusk was all too swift to pick up on this. He gave his sister a knowing smirk and a wink.
Claw pretended not to see it. Instead she said. "Of course you should get back to your people. I and Dusk will be more than happy to accompany you there. The others will bring the rest of our things when they are ready."
Dawngazer looked a little taken aback by this change in Claw's behavior, but simply nodded and returned her attention to Eclipse.
Releasing Dusk, Eclipse crossed his arms and surveyed the two elfesses. How alike they acted - really! "I suppose we should go back - I have some things left with you, I believe," he nodded towards Dawngazer, "But I haven't decided yet where I want to live and with which tribe. I suppose I'll have to see where I feel the most at home." And with those words and a self-satisfied smirk, Eclipse ambled away towards the place he had been resting on to get his comb. "Well - I'm ready to leave - are you coming or what?"
For some strange reason - he really, really had no idea why - Riv's heart felt like it had skipped a beat when Eclipse said that he hadn't decided which tribe he wanted to live with yet. Why would he care? He had given the wolfrider up for dead already...no, why did he care in the first place? "Stupid dreams," he muttered to himself, not even noticing he said that out loud. That had to be the only reason he hadn't simply forgotten Eclipse like all those others who had gotten separated from them in the troll attack and whose names he couldn't even remember anymore.
"We're leaving!" Claw shouted. "You three," she pointed at three of the hunters standing over by the one tent that hadn't been taken down yet, "finish here, then follow us."
The three hunters nodded, then went back to their tasks.
Almost as an after thought Claw lock-sent to Dawngazer: ~**You can have the loud-mouth with my thanks. That good-for-nothing has done nothing but eaten our food, stolen our best sleeping furs, not to meantion-**~ The sending ended as abruptly as it had begun and if anyone looked closely enough they might have noticed Claw's blushing ever so faintly. She gave Eclipse one last angry glare, before she began walking in the direction the new elves had indicated their shelter to be in.
Dawngazer gave Claw an odd look, but didn't reply. She wasn't the leasted surprised Eclipse had managed to make a mess of things with this tribe - the majoriety of his old one tended to be annoyed with him at best, on a good night. "You heard her," she said out loud instead, adressing Riv and Eclipse; the only people present she felt she had any right to order around.
Dusk gently slid out from under Eclipse's arm (or rather, body, as the elf was more or less draped over him), giving him a polite smile. Only elves who knew him very well would note the light of mischief in his eyes. Without a word he walked over to Riv and held out a hand, offering the other help to get to his feet. He let an eyebrow rise in amused confusion as Riv muttered something about dreams.
Riv didn't pay much attention to Dawngazer. On principle he didn't really obey anyone, and she was the one he would have been least likely to obey anyway, given their past history and how much Riv disliked her. And he was ready to leave anytime in any case, as the only things he had with him were his spear and the clothes he wore. As Dusk offered him a hand, he looked at it suspiciously at first, then took it. He could have gotten up on his own, but might as well not reject the offer in case he decided to try to join this tribe. But when Dusk gave him an odd look, he couldn't help reverting back to his usual behavior. "What?" he asked annoyedly.
Dusk just gave Eclipse an amused look, then turned around to follow his sister - though he did glance back at Riv at least once.
Seeing Claw stalk away Eclipse ran up to walk beside her and gave her a sly look; "Now... I understand Skyflare is at the other shelter." Pray tell - did you miss him?" Eclipse smile could not be smugger, adding; "I certainly did."
Claw's only reaction to this was to curse under her breath and then sped up her pace, acting as if Eclipse was thin air.
Dawngazer sighed to herself. *High Ones, let us be back with the others soon...*

Branchwalker cast a last, concerned glance over his shoulder, before putting a steadying hand on BrightStar's back. Riding your bond while injured was never easy - some help was always good.
Skyflare was likewise - though more awkwardly - helping with keeping Eveninglight on Stronglegs' back. It looked rather funny, as he was trying to help just as much as he was trying to keep a distance from the wolf.
There was a sort of awkward silence resting over the party of elves. The Children of the Oaks were doing their best to keep out of the wolves' way. The unbonded wolves wasn't making this too easy for them though, as the new elves were carrying their prey. Every other moment one of the wolves would circle one of the groups pulling a longrunner, giving the elves supicious glances.
Skyflare noticed Eveninglight moaning faintly. ~**It's all right,**~ he hurried to send to her, putting a reassuring hand on her back. ~**You'll be back with your people soon.**~
~**Who are you?**~ Eveninglight sent to Skyflare. He was not a member of her holt and she looked at him trying to seem like she was not staring. She wondered where he had come from. She had not noticed the other members of his tribe yet so it made him seem that much more out of place.
~**I am Skyflare. Our tribes are still strangers, you have not been unconscious for long.**~ The words were meant to be calming – hopefully they would be received as such. ~**Your healer is coming. Don't try to move, you've been injured.**~
Finally the shelter came into view - and with it a pleasant surprise. "Is that...?" Branchwalker asked aloud to no one in particulare. He couldn't be mistaken, that had to be her! **Cloudbird, my eyes see with joy!** he open-sent in a warm greeting. **We have food!** he continued, now addressing all the elves in the shelter. **Three longrunners.** ~**Sunsleaf, please come and see to BrightStar and Eveninglight - they look pretty bad off.**~ he lock-sent the last more to lessen the confusion of so many sendings than to keep it secret. The Children of the Oak weren't a threat - at least not in his opinion - and they would see her exit the shelter anyhow.
The locksend startled for a moment and then Sunsleaf rose, "You stay right here, and drink that tea." Her voice was stern, but the volume softened so as to minimize pain. She hurried to the entry only to be startled as she approached.
**Greetings!** Skyflare suddenly sent and was soon echoed by his tribe mates. They all halted a respectful distance from the shelter. As they all were helping with carrying things - especially the prey - and supporting the wounded, the entire party paused.
A frown crossed Sunsleaf's face briefly and then she peered around the entrance to see just what was going on. Gathering her pack she went to the injured to access the damage, wary of the strangers that had come with the others. White-ears moved to her side and she ruffled the wolf's ears lightly, "Had fun, did you? Silly wolf." Sunsleaf hadn't seen her bond this pleased with herself in some time.
Branchwalker smiled in relief as he spotted Sunsleaf greeting her bond-friend. "Here!" he called out to her. "BrightStar is hurt and I don't know how badly."
The Child of the Oaks standing closest to Branchwalker gave Sunsleaf a mystified look, as if her mere existence startled him. He didn't say anything though, just kept his distance from the wolves and continued staring – a few of his tribe mates did the same.
**This one is injured as well,** Skyflare suddenly sent, seemingly startling the other Children of the Oaks. They were lock-sending among each other – all obviously confused and some of the even lwith a faint look of disdain on their faces.
Eveninglight obeyed him at first, but after a moment she began to look about as quickly as she could without overwhelming pain. "Where is Shade?" She asked. She couldn't see her wolf-friend anywhere. "Has anyone seen Shade?"
Skyflare kept close to Eveninglight and the wolf she was resting on, unsure if he should try to keep her still or not. Finally he decided on a compromize. **Who is Shade?** he open-sent, addressing all the elves by the shelter. After all he didn't know all the new elves' names yet - this Shade could still be inside the hollow hill.
Eveninglight slid off Stronglegs, gasping at a sudden sharp pain in her chest but ignoring it and the pain in her head as well as she could. She began to walk back in the direction they had come from, a look of determination, and at the same time worry, on her face. "I'm going to look for Shade."
When Eveninglight suddenly dismounted Skyflare gently grabbed a-hold of her as quickly as he could. **You're injured. Who is Shade?** he repeated, confused.
Branchwalker, still at BrightStar's side, finally registered Skyflare's question when he saw Eveninglight attempt to walk back the way they'd come. **Shade is her wolf-friend,** he hurried to explain, wanting to go over and help stop Eveninglight from doing anything foolish, but at the same time he didn't want to leave the injured BrightStar. **Eveninglight, please stay still! You'll hurt yourself worse. The wolf oack is behind you.** Although, to be honest, he hadn't taken the time to count the wolves in the chaos after the hunt. Hopefully they had all come back - they hadn't howled like they used to when one of them died, but then again they too had been busy. ~**Sunsleaf, please help me!**~ He wasn't quite sure what he meant by that, only that he was feeling overwhelmed and that with Dawngazer away, she was the safest point somehow. That and BrightStar and Eveninglight needed the help of a healer.
Sunsleaf blushed a little at the send, but moved to Eveninglight's side, ** Sit, we will find Shade if the wolf isn't here. For now you need to be still and have your injuries tended. ** She looked to the one with a hold on Eveninglight, "Help her sit please? I have to see to the others and make tea."
Skyflare did as he was told, gently urging Eveninglight to sit. You didn't argue with a healer, even one that was out of place.
Eveninglight carefully lowered herself to the ground, holding tightly onto Skyflare's arm to support herself. She kept staring off the direction they had come from, she believed that Shade had to be alive but she was very worried. He hadn't been under the longrunner with her so clearly somehow when it collided with them he managed to get out of the way. But then where was he? "I have to go back once I've been healed." She said quietly, more to herself than to anybody else.
Skyflare - not having any knowledge of bond-friends, but having had a pet snake once - asked: "Have you had this wolf long?" Taming such large predators, especially in group like this. And such a success must feel painful to lose, surely?
"I've had him for almost six years." Eveninglight replied quietly between sips of tea. The warm drink was helping to calm her, she wasn't frantic now like she had been. Skyflare's question made her think about when Shade became her bond and she sat in silence, reflecting on the years she'd spent with him. She wasn't sure what she'd do without him if... quickly she turned her mind away from those thoughts. She didn't want to think about that possibility.
Skyfaler frowned. Six years was a long time - his pet hadn't even lived that long. "Is there no way for you to call on him?" He'd had friends who'd tamed longrunners and had them come back to the tents at night by whistling for them. Perhaps this elfess had trained her wolf in a similar manner.
Sunsleaf didn't much wait for an answer before moving toward Brightstar and Branchwalker, ~** Calmly, everyone will be tended to. **~ She hoped to steady him with those words, as her attention turned to Brightstar and she looked him over. To Branchwalker again, ~** We found some materials for your baskets. **~ She was already checking her pack to see what she had collected that would be suitable for the injured. ~** I am glad you are unharmed, Branchwalker. **~ This send was softer than the previous two and she couldn't bring herself to look up at him.
Branchwalker did calm down a little when Sunsleaf replied to him. He smiled faintly as she meantioned material for his baskets - he'd almost forgotten about that entirely. ~**And I'm glad you're here,**~ he sent back when the sending she didn't meet his eyes for came. He might have been blushing a bit, but he didn't know if that was because of embarrassment or because he felt silly watching the groud instead of the one he was addressing. ~**It feels safer that way.**~ Stars, he was starting to sound like a one eight old cub!
Stealing a glance at Branchwalker she smiled, ~** I may be no warrior, but I would keep you safe as best I could. **~, and then returned to her preparations. Choosing which herbs to use and ducking away to get some of the water left over from the first tea making. She had only used a portion and so the rest was handy for the new teas. She mixed three blends, she made a small amount of sweet mint tea to offer Branchwalker, she hoped it would help him and then the teas for Eveninglight and Brightstar. She didn't let her guard down while the teas were steeping, but carried bowls for Eveninglight and Brightstar to each of them. She asked Skyflare to help Eveninglight and to be sure she drank it all, then asked Branchwalker to be sure Brightstar drank his. Then she took two small wooden cups, and poured some of the sweet mint tea into each before walking back to Branchwalker and offering one to him, ~** For you, to warm you up and to soothe. **~ She hoped Bloodmane was back soon with the wood, and she would need her help also in binding Eveninglight's ribs. She didn't envy the huntress the discomfort that would come during the healing. But she hoped another herb gathering outing would gain them some boneknit to speed the process along.
Skyflare did as told, supporting Eveninglight, helping her drink, while waiting for her to answer his question.
Branchwalker fell silent for a while as he helped BrightStar drink his tea. He accepted the cup Sunsleaf offered him with a small, tired smile. Then, eyes down-cast, watching the liquid in the cup, he lock- sent: ~**I...I think I prefer you being a healer, rather than a warrior.**~ He didn't elaborate further, only blushed faintly and took another gulp of his tea. "This is very good, thank you."
~** I prefer being a healer, it is good to know that you prefer me this way. **~ She blushed brighter and glanced over at him, "There is more if you wish. And it might be better to move the injured into the cave. Best for you too, maybe."
Branchwalker gave a small nodd, somehow feeling pleased, both with himself and with Sunsleaf's reply. He felt much calmer and focused now, but getting back into the shelter would feel better. "Yes, thank you," he said, holding up his empty cup, "but perhaps when we're back inside. I'll help you with BrightStar."
One-Edge had been helping Clearice gut and prepare fish, when the strangers arrived. She'd hurried to wash her hands with some sand and water, not wanting to greet new elves with fishguts under her nails. Then the wolfrider turned back to the open place outside the shelter, her steps quickening as she picked up the sound of familiar voices. It was with a laugh One-Edge greeted the returned packmates. "Oh, by the moons... my eyes see with you!"
Longsong smiled even wider as his lifemate rushed to greet Cloudbird. This was truly a good night...at least, not counting the injuries Eveninglight and BrightStar had gotten. They didn't seemed to be mortally wounded - at least judging from Sunsleaf's reaction to them - but you never knew for sure. ~**Beloved, have you seen Shade?**~ he lock-sent to One-Edge. He couldn't see the entire pack from where he was standing, so he couldn't be sure if the wolf was missing or not.

Bloodmane heard the various sendings - first Branchwalker's, and then someone's she didn't know - but continued hacking down the last willow branch with her knife. This should have been enough for two wounded.
QuickSand gathered some of the branches in her arms, trying to carry as many as possible at once. "They look even odder when you see them close," she suddenly commented. "The strangers," she clarified, when she realized how unspecific her words had been. "And they're quite boring - if you don't think about their hair. I didn't see *any* bonds, just the wolves. That's boring. I wanted gigantic, walking fish with huge fangs! They could have gobbled a troll up in no time."
Bloodmane couldn't help chuckling at QuickSand's words. Cubs came up with weirdest of ideas sometimes. "Gigantic, walking fish?" she asked as she finished cutting the last branch, sheathed her knife and gathered what the cubs hadn't grabbed yet on her arms. That would have been quite a sight. Even though she knew very well that fish couldn't live on dry land.
LizardStalker listened to QuickSand quietly and gave a sort-of giggle. "I'd like to see that." he said softly to them. He was looking around taking in everything, just for future information that only he would want.
"Of course you would!" QuickSand agreed with LizardStalker, a cocksure smile on her face. In her world no one, at least never another cub, could truly disagree with her. "But at least they have funny hair. I want hair like that - though it might get cold..." She looked thoughtful for a moment. "Do you think I should cut my hair like that?" The question could just as easily have been directed at Bloodmane as at LizardStalker.
"I think your hair is just fine as it is now," Bloodmane said with a soft smile. Even after everything that had happened, cubs could still somehow make her laugh. "Let's go now. This wood is needed back at the shelter."
LizardStalker looked to QuickSand and smiled, "I like your hair the way it is." he whispered to her. He went and picked up some of the wood to help and looked up to Bloodmane.
"Really?" QuickSand replied with a big smile. "But I still want to know how they get their hair to stand up like that. I'll ask as soon as I have time." At Bloodmane's comment at getting back to the shelter QuickSand hurried to balance the branches she was carrying, then set off at trotting speed, eager to get back.
