(Ooc: Dawngazer , Tracker, open for others to join) Tracker nodded at Dawngazer and Sureshot. "Let us go then", he said, "I was thinking the same, about the prey.", he added, as he started walking out of the makeshift camp. "We'll need food soon. A hunt will be needed." He looked around. "We should also keep our eyes open, to check if we're not being followed. Let's go back our trail for a bit, the stream was in that direction anyway." He sighed, sad. "I don't know what came over my tribesmates..."

Dawngazer bit her tongue as they began their walk towards the stream. It was not far, but enough time passed for it to sound awkward when she followed up Tracker's comment about his tribemates with: "And where do you stand? Regarding your tribe and mine. Have you any idea of what they find so frightening about our wolf-blood? Is it that wolves are large predators? Would it have been better if we'd been bonded to birds? Or hares? You can't blame it all on the false High One because your people were more than eager to throw us out with our injured and cubs long before he showed up." She knelt down to dip a waterskin into the stream, doing her best to keep her voice steady and even. The rage that had seeped into her from Stronglegs and made her lose her head at the start of the fight with the Children was gone, lost to his sleeping and the Now, but she had plenty of rage of her own. But Tracker hadn't spoken ill of them. In fact, he'd seemed to be on their side, all that she'd seen of him. Maybe it was a false act but she had no room for second guessing all potential allies. Her tribe needed all help they could get. Glancing at Sureshot out of the corner of her eye, Dawngazer found herself smiling faintly. It was strange to think she trusted him more than Tracker, even though it was Sureshot who not long ago had gotten himself a nasty punch from Sunsleaf. Strange nights they'd come upon. OOC: Since it was forever ago it happened in-game, I'm just posting a general reminder that none of the survivors know they're mortal, while all Children of the Oaks know animal-blood means mortality. Also, no Children of the Oaks know who the "False High One" is - at least none of the Children of the Oaks here with us

Dipping waterskins in the stream, Tracker took his time to think about the many questions Dawngazer had asked him. "Well", he said, "as to where I stand regarding our tribes... I think we are all elves and we should help each other in times of need. It was wrong to send you away and it was wrong of my tribemates to attack you." He fell silent, thinking about what happened. He felt ashamed and worried about his tribemates. Why had they followed the orders of the tall stranger so mindlessly? "About your blood... I do not mind that, but I too do not feel very comfortable around the wolves, being the predators they are. That may have scared my tribesmates too, I think. But I cannot speak for them. People get scared easily of things they don't understand though. But this false High One... I think that is a good name for him. His actions were far from what one would expect of a High One.” He shook his head, as to clear it from the bad memories that plagued him. “I don’t know, I really don’t know and I don’t understand... I wish I did...”
(ooc: at least I think Tracker doesn't know about it, please let me know if I'm wrong!)

OOC: In our earlier threads a tall elf that looked like a High One appeared. He strangled Longsong to get a stone. He caused those CotO elves to go mad and attack. And magically stole 2 of the survivors and Claw. Tracker saw this elf. But you can decide whether he believes the elf to be a real High One or a false High One

(oc: thanks for your explanation. I didn't know Tracker had seen him. Is it obvious that the false High One caused the others to go mad? I will adjust my post above when I have it clear )

OOC: I'll send some extracts in a private message. Tracker had seen him. I'd say for those present, it was obvious the "High One" was involved as he shouted "Kill the curs" and that's when the CotO attacked.

OOC: I'll hold off on posting a reply here gerlin in case you want to make any changes - but we could just play it as Tracker not connecting the term "false High One" (which is a term the survivors have been using for the tall elf who appeared) to the elf in question, if that works for you

(Ooc: thank you for all the help! I have changed my post. I think it’s better now, but suggestions for improvement are always welcome)

OOC: Since this thread is the only one with just me and gerlin in it, I'm only replying here until I know how things stand with other players Edit: Correction, Gerlin and I are the only _active_ players I know who are in this thread - sorry for forgetting about Sureshot! IC:Dawngazer sighed, a long, deep breath that left her legs shaky. She was running on borrowed time, barely keeping upright. Rage could only sustain you for so long. "At least we agree on the fact that he's a false High One. Whatever magic he has, it's clearly too strong to fight. We should keep running, but we need to figure out where we're running to." She was speaking half to Tracker, half to herself. She started in on filling a second waterskin. "I wish I could make you and your people feel more at ease around the wolves. Do you have any suggestions on how?" The wolves had sharp teeth and claws, yes, but they were family as much as the elfin tribe members. Being scared of wolves felt so strange to her, but she was trying to understand.

Tracker used the time it took to fill another waterskin, to think about Dawngazer's words. "I don't like running away. I would like to find out more about this false High One and what he has done to my tribe." He felt ashamed of what had happened. He shook his head. "I still don't understand." He closed the waterskin. "That's all of them, I think?", he asked, getting up. "About where we are going... I don't know. I'll follow your chief's lead in this, but perhaps if you have a suggestion you can tell him?" He knew very well not all leaders liked that, but Greyspear didn't seem to be like that. "The wolves... I think that will be up to us, to get more familiar with them as tribemembers, which they are to you. We only know them as predators and competition to prey." He smiled. "Don't worry. I'm sure we'll be alright."

"Brave words," Dawngazer said, though knowing she was the last person who should be chastising anyone for not liking to run away. Knowing they'd left people behind...that burned her. "I'll like to get my hands on him too, but I think we'll need stronger allies before we try anything. Going back to your people right now would be," she paused, looking for a word that wouldn't be insulting, "unwise." To Tracker's comment about them finished, she answered, "Yes, I think we're done." She glanced over at Sureshot who'd remained so quiet during the little water quest. She thought about asking him a direct question, to try and figure out what he was thinking, when Tracker's comment about their 'chief' struck her. "...we don't have a chief." It still felt unreal, despite it not being new. "Greyspear is our eldest, so we listen to him, but he's not our chief." Maybe he could be? As terrible as it was to think it, Brighteyes was lost without a trace. It was hard to imagine life, still, with the line of chiefs this broken. Stories told it had been hard enough for the tribe when Boldpath ruled, but surely nothing could compare to this? While running it had been easy to push the issues of needing a chief off beyond the Now. This? This couldn't go ignored. "Your tribe has many chiefs. I don't think I fully understand how you know who will lead you. Or if it was explained to me, I have forgotten. How is it done?" The Children of the Oaks as a tribe she had no love for, but they needed a chief, need some sense of normalcy. They couldn't go on like this forever. Even if they found the bird-bloods, without the line of chiefs, how would they go back to having a holt? As for the question of wolves... "If you wish help in getting to know the wolves, I could try and assist you and anyone else willing. Just like you're used to seeing them as rival hunters, I'm quite sure most of them now see you as the same. You'll have to prove to them that you truly are elves." To Dawngazer, it made no sense that bond-wolves ever should be hostile toward elves. Grumpy, yes, and wolves from outside of the tribe weren't to be trusted lightly, but bond-wolves were as worthy of trust to her as her elfin tribemates. Maybe I should have thought the same of other elves too.OOC: Dawngazer still has a very narrow world view XD

(ooc: sorry it took me so long to reply! And I hope I have the info on the Chiefs of the Branches remembered right. I couldn't find the info I was looking for about it. I'll fix it if I got it wrong)
Tracker nodded. "I agree. It would be foolish to return now. We know too little of what is going on and whether my people are still so hostile. They were behaving like rabid animals. It hurts me to say this, but they seemed... diseased." He shook his head as sadness overcame him. "We need more knowledge and indeed more allies, before we can try and go back there."
"I am sorry to hear you are without chief. Your tribe has truly been trough harder times than I can imagine", Tracker said,"Greyspear does seem to do his best to lead and he has a good heart. Can't you choose him to be your chief? That's how it's done in my tribe."
"How do I prove to the wolves that I'm an elf?", Tracker asked curious, "Can you show me? Could I learn to hunt, together with the wolves? Maybe then I can make Wasp see sense in the bonding with wolves. She can be very stubborn."
